AMD’s measure against the crisis, a cheap motherboard?

Today’s AMD is nothing like it was a few years ago, now it’s a savage beast that bites and won’t budge. Your next chess move against Intel? The launch of a cheap version of motherboards with A620 chipset. Which should serve them to increase their market share, especially among users with a precarious economy.

One of the tricks processor manufacturers use to lower the apparent price of their desktop CPUs is to charge the cost on the motherboard, since the motherboard will be needed to build the computer and the main chip cannot function without it. Well, one of the problems that AMD had during the launch of its Ryzen 7000 was the high price of its motherboards and everything indicates that its next big launch will be a low-cost motherboard.

A cheap version of the A620 chipset?

In principle it would not be a new chipset, but a cheaper version of the A620, the cheapest and with the fewest features so far of those that preside over the motherboards for AMD CPUs that use the AM5 socket. That is, Ryzen 7000 and its variant with V-Cache, the Ryzen 7000 X3D. The objective? Making it possible for motherboards to exist on the market for a average price of 125 euros, Therefore, it is expected that they will have limited support for PCI Express 5.0 and lack overclocking capabilities, both for the processor and for DDR5 memory.

What’s more, everything indicates that there are two versions of the A620 chipset, the first one called Promontory 21 will be seen in the first batch of motherboards, which have been ready for sale for months. The second generation will allow cheaper boards to be launched, but maintaining the same specifications. The reason behind it is that the first batch A620 chipset is the same as the X670 chipset, but with cut functions, the second chip will be a cheaper one and thus the cost of motherboards can be cut.

What the eye does not see

The news that AMD is selling more than Intel is going around the world, however, they are getting it with the Ryzen 5000 and the current concern of those at Lisa Su is that the Ryzen 7000 will start to sell better. The solution? A cheap version of the A620 chipset to boost sales of its latest generation CPU. Which is a move that makes sense in the current economic climate.

Let’s not forget that AMD has long established itself as the best value for money alternative to Intel, but at the same time it needs to grow financially in order to remain competitive. Which means expensive processors and motherboards, but they can’t abandon their longtime market either, hence the Ryzen 7000 with no letter in the name and 65W TDP and cheap A620 motherboards.

The strategy is clear, with the Ryzen 5000 already in liquidation and in retirement, it is normal that Lisa Su’s have decided to want to repeat the same play, but this time with the Ryzen 7000. It cannot be denied that it is a good move and honestly, it will be an incentive to build a PC with a Zen 4 architecture CPU.
