Apple TV+ is not shy, and will offer its subscribers a rereading of a science fiction classic: Metropolis
In the ranking of films you must have seen, Metropolis holds a prominent place. Fritz Lang’s masterpiece is still considered a must-have in science fiction today. An untouchable film? Obviously, this reputation does not scare Apple TV +, which intends to offer it a reboot in the form of a series.
At the head of this ambitious, and somewhat risky project, the platform has appointed an important figure in the television sector. It’s up to Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) that the task has been assigned. The screenwriter and showrunner will wear this modern reinterpretation of Metropolis. He will also go behind the camera, just to play on all fronts.
As a reminder, the film released in 1927 narrated a revolution of androids in the year 2026. While workers work in the undergrounds of a fabulous metropolis, thus assuming the happiness of the wealthy who live in the hanging gardens of the city, a android leads them to revolt.
While the year 2026 is not very far away, and androids are still far from having obtained a central place in our societies, it is difficult to know for the moment what path this new version will take. One thing is certain, it should take us several years into the future.
A still mysterious project
If this formalization brings with them some information on the technical and production teams, such as the participation of the Universal group in its start-up, there are many unknowns in this equation. It is not yet known who the actors will be on the bill. Nothing surprising since the project seems to be in its infancy.
The broadcast date has not been shared either, so we will have to be patient. Nevertheless, this Metropolis 2.0 has something to intrigue us. Since its launch, Apple TV+ has made a point of offering only new content. The firm willingly tackles the pillars of science fiction, and so far we have only been very rarely disappointed.
The adaptation of Foundation, a first, was a tour de force for the Cupertino company, no doubt it will be the same for Metropolis. Faced with increasingly tough competition in the sector, dominated by Netflix and Disney+, Apple TV+ has all the keys in hand to establish itself as the favorite destination for lovers of mature and ambitious productions.
