Fever for making PC games portable, why?

Virtually always the game on PC has been linked to a sedentary activity, that we always carry out sitting in front of the desk at home where we have a huge monitor and a keyboard with a mouse in front of it. But in recent times there has been an increasingly important movement that wants to transform this activity into a portable one. You know why?

The success of Steam Deck

Steam has been the great savior of the PC gaming market. In 2004, when it was released, nobody gave a penny for the system, which lived surrounded by piracy and releases that hardly reported benefits to their developers. Thanks to Valve that changed, a reliable environment for both users and companies was ensured and it began to take hold until today, when its volume continues to grow year after year.

So when Valve released the Steam Deck in March of last year, many doubted that he would go far but it turns out that just 12 months later, not only do we have it consolidated in the market and with more than three million units sold, but Asus wants to launch its own model in 2023, even more vitaminized, and Microsoft is thinking about a version of Windows 11 specifically designed for the Gabe Newell console.

But what is the reason that everyone has taken to getting into a race that, until now, has not been a concern of PC gamers? do you think there is that need to transform into portable that habit that we all have of playing in front of the PC at home?

The market is mobilizes

we have written the word mobilize bad bet because we wanted to use the term in English and not Spanish that refers above all to that trend that everyone says will occur in the coming years for which gaming platforms will not be anchored to a single place at home and that will allow you to enjoy them anywhere. They will be mobile in the sense of portable. And for that need, we need a device that allows us to carry our favorite games with us.

Nintendo already has its own, the Switch concept; Valve too, with Steam Deck; Microsoft is considering launching another one more focused on the streaming, to bring your Xbox Game Pass to life beyond your Xbox machines or PC; Sony is also speculated to return to the portable market with another PlayStation for remote play; and we have already told you about Asus about your PC consolidated in the image and likeness of Steam.

In a connected world, and sometimes in the cloud, companies know they can’t offer a single place to play from –the living room or the desk at home– and they have started a race to transform the game into a laptop since, let’s not forget, the big slice of the video game revenue pie is not on our computer, or on PS5 and Xbos Series X, but on the screen of our mobiles. Better example than any that these platforms will not be able to grow much more if they do not get us to go permanently with them next door. Hence this fever for portabilize the PC already.
