Gigabyte announces upcoming faster-than-lightning SSD hard drive

The interesting thing about the PCIe 5.0 interface is that it has been available on the market for almost a year, but there is no hardware for it. Currently, Intel Alder Lake processors already offer support for PCIe 5.0, but there are no compatible components, which sounds like a bad joke, but it is a reality.

Gigabyte introduces its SSD based on PCIe 5.0

Surely you know Gigabyte well, since it is one of the most important manufacturers of motherboards, graphics cards and other components in the market. It offers different solutions for video game fans under its AORUS product range. This range is extended with new storage units extremely fast.

The company has announced the AORUS Gen5 10000 SSD, which will use the new data interface and new memories. Specifically it will be based on PCIe 5.0 and will use new high-speed 3D TLC NAND Flash memories. As indicated, these new units will be up to 55% faster than current SSD-based hard drives PCIe 4.0.

Gigabyte indicates that units ranging from 1TB to 4TB. The truth is that it is planned that the first units to be launched will be 4 TB and then the rest will arrive.

Something interesting is that this storage unit will arrive without a heatsink, which will have to be purchased separately or we can use the one on the motherboard itself. Gigabyte notes that they offer their exclusive SSD Tool Box with these drives. This allows the user to see the status of the drive in real time, being able to control the capacity and temperature of the drive.

The company has shown a performance capture of this unit, which is very interesting. According to it, the unit will offer approximately one read speed up to 12,500 GB/s and write speed up to 10,000 GB/s.

A hard drive with the best technology on the market

According to Gigabyte, state-of-the-art components will be used in these units. Most importantly, it will be based on the Phison PS5026-E26 controller. This controller offers 8 channels to offer the maximum possible speeds.

This unit integrates the news 3D TLC NAND Flash memories with more than 200 layers and a frequency of 2400 MT/s. In addition, it makes use of cache memory, specifically using an LPDDR4 memory chip. The combination of these three elements allows this unit to offer these speeds.

Gigabyte indicates that these new AORUS Gen5 10000 SSD hard drives are fully compatible with the company’s motherboards with Z690 chipset. Remember that this chipset is for Intel Alder Lake processors, the first to support PCIe 5.0.

What we do not know at the moment is the price of these new storage units based on PCIe 5.0. Given the price at which PCIe 4.0 SSDs were launched, we can expect a price of over 1,000 euros for this 4TB drive.
