Intel buys Siru Innovations, a Finnish company specializing in graphics

Intel has boughtpractically without making a sound a Finnish company specializing in graphics technology: Siru Technologies. Founded by several former engineers who are experts in working with GPUs and who have passed through AMD or Qualcomm. According to The Register, they created Bitboys in the 90s, a company that ATI bought in 2006, shortly before AMD bought it to set up the seed of AMD Finland. In 2009, AMD sold its mobile division, in which the experts from the former Bitboys worked, to Qualcomm, which led to the birth of Qualcomm Finland. But the creators of Siru left Qualcomm to start their company in 2011.

In its day, Bitboys was considered one of the foremost companies in desktop graphics work. But Siru is not exactly one of the most famous companies in the world of graphics, although it has several industry veterans in its management and staff.

Siru Innovations is specialized in the development of software and components for third-party GPUs, and its entire team will go to work for Intel when the company’s purchase operation is closed. Specifically, they will join Intel’s Accelerated Computing Systems division and Graphics Group. Several of its experts will have passed in their career, therefore, by most of the most prominent technology companies dedicated to the development of hardware.

The news has been confirmed by a message on the official Twitter account of Intel Graphicsand from a post on LinkedIn by Balaji Kanigicherla, Head of Custom Computing Group, Intel Graphics Division. In it, he notes that the Siru staff’s expertise in hardware architecture, software, modeling and implementation will help Intel in its efforts to advance computing in several high-growth areas. Among them, in Blockchain and in the metaverse.

Thus, according to Kanigicherla, the integration of Siru in Intel Graphics will drive the focus of “lhe graphics division and the Custom Computing Group in the development of custom hardware and platform solutions, as well as emerging accelerated computing solutions, in the areas of Blockchain, Metaverse, high-performance edge computing and hyperscale, which which represents a significant opportunity for the coming years«.

The company also hopes that Siru’s experts can help in other areas. Specifically, in the following: mobility as a service, advanced driver assistance systems, gaming and hyperscale data centers.
