Intel Discontinues Cascade Lake CPUs for Workstations and HEDT

The chip giant has made the decision to discontinue its Cascade Lake processors for workstations and HEDT, which stands for High Performance Computing. This generation of processors was released in 2019, so it is a totally normal movement considering that we are in 2023, and that said generation was widely surpassed by more modern solutions.

Intel’s Cascade Lake processors were made in the 14nm++ node, which means that within the general consumer market its closest equivalents would be the Comet Lake-S models, which were also based on the 14nm++ node. In terms of IPC, the Intel Cascade Lake lags far behind the new Intel professional processors based on the Golden Cove architecture, and manufactured under the Intel 7 node.

However, the truth is that the Cascade Lake offered a high level of performance at the time. Within the Xeon series there was a significant increase in power also in multithreading, which was possible thanks to its configurations of up to 56 cores and 112 threads. The most powerful model was, if I remember correctly, the Intel Xeon Platinum 9282, which ran at 2.6GHz-3.8GHz and had 77 MB L3 cache.

This movement that marks the end of the life cycle of these processors affects, for the moment, to all Core-X, and to Xeon W-2200. In the attached table you will find an exhaustive list with all the models that have been discontinued. Only the Xeon W-3200 have been saved, perhaps because Intel still gets quite a few orders for these processors, or simply because it may have a score to settle. In any case, they will also end up being discontinued sooner or later.

Intel has confirmed that the order deadline will be April 26, 2024, with the last units shipping through January 31, 2025. This grace period is common when the phase-out of an entire generation begins of professional processors, and its objective is to give companies and professionals a reasonable margin so that they can obtain the units they may need to cover their current needs, and also in the short or medium term.
