iPhone 15, goodbye to SIM cards in Europe?

In the absence of almost six months for the presentation of the iPhone 15, we continue to receive rumors and leaks about the next generation of Apple’s smartphone. Again, as we have experienced in previous years, it seems that we will already have a fairly accurate portrait of what Apple tries, once again unsuccessfully, to keep secret until the day of the presentation, which will take place on a Tuesday between the beginning and the middle of September, maybe the 5th, maybe the 12th or, at the latest (and I would be surprised, unless there is some problem in the mass production process), the 19th.

The latest news that we have had in this regard, so far, has to do with the possible jump from steel to titanium and the move, in the Pro models, from two to a single volume control button, the expected move to USB- C, Dynamic Island in all models… in this complete entry you can find a complete selection of the most notable, with a reflection on these rumors and if it makes more or less sense for these changes to be introduced or not.

Now a new rumor is added, very interesting and that also fits quite well into Apple’s policies. As we can read in iGeneration (in French and behind a paywall) all iPhone 15 models will not have a SIM card tray, so they can only be used with eSIMa technology that Apple has been betting on for some time and that it considers more secure than traditional SIM cards, to which we have become accustomed since the debut of GSM cellular telephony (remember that, previously, the line was associated with the terminal of permanent way).

iPhone 15, goodbye to SIM cards in Europe?

This movement is not too surprising, given that iPhone 14s sold in the United States also do not have a SIM card tray, a change that at first might seem very daring, but that seems to have fitted in quite well with its users, given the good sales numbers of the current generation in the country. Given this success, it seems likely that Apple has decided to export this novelty to other markets.

The news mentions France specifically, which invites us to think about two possibilities:

  1. Said medium alludes to his country of origin, but the change would apply to all of Europe.
  2. Aware of the particularities of the European markets, Apple considers a first test on this side of the Atlantic only in one or a few countries.

Personally, I am more inclined towards the first option, firstly because given that the American experience has been successful, without a doubt they will be looking forward to extending the exclusive use of eSIM to the rest of the world as soon as possible, and that happens by making the iPhone 15 use it in as many geographies as possible. And second, because given the particularities of the French market, it does not seem to be the best choice to carry out a test in this regard.

Although there are still quite a few users who are reluctant to change the physical SIM card for its electronic version, the truth is that the configuration of an eSIM is a really simple process, and that its operation is similar, once configured, to that of a traditional SIMwith the only difference that it does not have a memory to store contacts, a function that is hardly used anymore, since their management in smartphone operating systems is much more complete.
