Now a handful of reports suggest that the Californian company’s most expensive iPhone, The iPhone 15 Pro Max may be having screen problems. The launch of Apple’s iPhone 15 series has generated a lot of attention and discussion. Additionally, in recent weeks, the company faced comments and discussions regarding the overheating problems with these new devices.

Additionally, reports have emerged that some iPhone devices have been shutting down unexpectedly, which is believed to be a result of an error derived from the update to the new iOS 17 operating system.

As with many top device launches, the launch of the iPhone 15 has not been a bed of roses for Apple. While most of the early iPhone 15 issues have been addressed in one way or another, a new issue has emerged that may be more difficult to counter.

A new report has emerged on the internet, shedding light on the screen recording issues experienced by iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users on their new devices.

According to information shared by Tarun Vats, known as @tarunvats33 on Twitter and recognized as a prominent technology enthusiast and informant, he communicates that iPhone 15 Pro Max is experiencing screen burn-in and/or retention issues.

In X, Tarun Vats highlighted the fate of a series of iPhone 15 Pro Max phones that appear to be suffering from some kind of image retention. All the images it shows come from Reddit and Apple’s own discussion forums.

He shared images illustrating screen issues with the iPhone Pro Max and commented: “Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max is reportedly experiencing screen recording issues, contributing to the company’s growing list of challenges this year.”

It’s unclear how widespread the issue is, but on the Reddit thread at least Four other users report similar problemsand one of them is with the iPhone 15 Pro, suggesting that it may not be limited to the 6.7-inch Pro Max phone.

Vats specifically calls the problem «in screen burn-in»but given that the phones have been on the market for less than a month, it seems more likely that there will be temporary image retention on the screen itself.

Apple does not mention the problems

Importantly, Apple has not issued an official statement regarding the reported screen recording issues on the iPhone 15 Pro series.

For those curious to distinguish between screen recording (burn-in) and retention issues:

  • The retention is temporary and will disappear shortly after turning off the device for about five minutes.
  • On the contrary, screen burn is a persistent ghostly image or mark on the screen from your phone which can be very frustrating as it does not fade over time.

In fact, some users expressed their disappointment on Twitter by attaching images and sources to support their statement on the issue.

Screen recording, where an image is permanently displayed on OLED screens, used to be a big problem with OLED TVs with static images like channel logos and news tickers being particularly susceptible, but screen savers and pixel refresh software have largely made this a fairly old problem.

But even if the iPhone problem isn’t exactly the typical burn-in that occurred in the past, something is clearly wrong with the affected phones, perhaps a faulty batch of panels.

Perhaps the always-on display along with the new brighter panels, which can reach up to 2,000 nits of brightness, are the reason. why the new iPhones are failing, because we must remember that the previous iPhone 14, which have similar characteristics and functions, have been on the market for more than a year, with daily use by many users, and have not suffered this type from problems.

According to the report, problems with image retention can usually be resolved through regular use of a screen protector. This practice helps refresh the pixels, preventing them from constantly displaying the same text or images on the screen for long periods.

We are talking about a screen protector specific to the device, software, not the typical “plastic or glass” that we place externally to our device to protect it as much as possible from scratches, keys, falls…

The report alternatively suggests the following steps to avoid such problems.

  • Go to the Apple menu, opt for System Preferences and proceed to click Desktop and Screen Saver.
  • Access the tab Screen Saver and select your preferred screen saver.
  • Adjust the menu «Start later» to choose a time interval Make it shorter than what you have configured for screen sleep and computer sleep in the power saving settings found in System Preferences.
  • To efficiently remove any lingering images, make sure the screen saver runs for a duration similar to the initial time the image was displayed.

Conclusion

At the moment, this is a handful of isolated incidents, and I hope it stays that way. But with phones only out in the wild for less than a month, we may not have heard the last of this story.

In the meantime, if you’re affected, you should go to the Apple Store and see if the store’s technicians can help you with a repair or replacement. Remember that in Spain we now have a three-year warranty, and Apple also has the AppleCare service, even now adding theft or loss, which you can activate on your new company devices within 60 days of purchase.
