Meteor Lake: 14th Gen Intel Core, in 2024 and for Windows 12

Meteor Lake will be the code name for the next generation of Intel processors. Although up to now there has been no confirmation from Intel of the specifications, release date and generation number that it will occupy, we have been receiving different unofficial information about all of this. Now we get another one from internal documents, which puts us on the track of various details.

Intel’s processor catalog is a real monster, as we saw days ago in the update of the guide where we detailed how to identify each of the models, differentiating them by generation, architecture, brand, and other variants. In it we also saw the next discontinuation of Generation 11, in January 2024.

Everything indicates that Intel is lightening the catalog for what is to come. And it is the Meteor Lake that concerns us. The leaked image lists different hardware support of the oneVPL and Media SDK, although the most interesting thing is that clearly identifies the 14th generation Core processor family as Meteor Lake. It is the first time we see this. And it is important to know when they can reach the market.

Meteor Lake

If in general Intel markets new generations year after year, this time it seems that it is going to be delayed and Meteor Lake would not arrive until 2024. Intel would compensate with some Raptor Lake “Refresh” that would be launched in the last quarter of 2023. The break PC sales this year, after the spectacular ones during the pandemic, could be behind this decision. No massive updates are expected this year and maybe Intel considers it more convenient to delay the launch.

Another point that can feed this strategy is Windows 12. If the new engineering schedule and the launch of new major versions of Windows every three years are finalized, the date chosen for the launch of Windows 12 would be the fall of 2024. And it would be key to recover upgrades and sales of personal computers.

In the technical section, no major news is expected. Intel will continue to use the hybrid architecture released at Alder Lake and the main features of Raptor Lake, being able to install it on current motherboards with LGA 1700 socket and own 7 series chipsets, with support for DDR5 memories, PCI 5.0 interfaces for storage and graphics and support for Wi-Fi 6E, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4.

Intel will redeploy a large number of versions of these Meteor Lake to cover all the market segments where it works, from embedded to laptops, going through any type of desktop with the S series. Models have been seen from 14 cores to 22 cores and 28 threads with frequencies above 5 GHz. Intel is expected to increase the performance of the Xe integrated graphics.

And for 2025, another new platform appears on the horizon, Arrow Lake, which, if it follows the line, should correspond to the 15th Gen of the Core. We will keep track of them.
