Millennials spend more time on video games, and use them to relax

The world of video games has evolved a lot during the last three decades, and it is very curious because some of the most important changes in this sector they were produced during the stage of what we know as generation Yalso called millennials.

Generation Y is made up of those born between the eighties and the year 2000. During this period, such important events took place in the world of videogames such as the release of 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit and 128-bit consoles, and some of the most important and influential franchises within this sector were also launched, among which we can mention names such as Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Sonic, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Street Fighter.

What can I say, it was a true golden age for video games, and I was lucky to live it. Since then, the scope of video games has been increasing, and has even reached people who decades ago had no interest in this type of digital entertainment.

We can say that today we play video games much more than three decades ago, and that the demand for them has grown exponentially, But how much do we play and why do we do it? These are two very interesting questions that we can answer thanks to a study carried out by Fandom. The data provided by this study is very interesting, and we are going to review it in depth.

In the first graph we can see that the consumption of video games among millennials is very high. 40% acknowledge dedicating more than 22 hours a week to this type of leisure, while only 29% of the pre-adolescents surveyed reach that number of hours a week. Regarding the evolution of video game consumption year over year, the majority of millennials say that it has remained the same, while in the case of generation Z, adolescents and tweens it has grown considerably.

The second graph shows us the reasons why these four generations consume video games. In the case of pre-adolescents, the dominant reasons are to pass the time and personal fulfillment, achievements. In the case of adolescents, relaxation and passing the time dominate, while generation Z plays mainly to relax and pass the time. Millennials say they play mainly to relax and explore.
