Our Readers Speak Up: Has Video Game Development Stagnated Too Much?

For years I have been noticing a deepening stagnation in the development of video games, and not only from a technical point of view, but also at a playable and narrative level. All this has made me return, more and more, to enjoy retro titles that I played many years ago, and has left me in a situation of slight exhaustion that only some very specific titles have broken at different times, such as the first installment of The Division, Cyberpunk 2077, Shenmue III and Fallout 4.

video game developments They are still mostly anchored in the concept of a corridor sandbox with repetitive missions that lead us to get fed up, and that in the end end up producing a linearity that is difficult to break unless the game is endowed with something especially attractive, such as a unique setting (The Division), a sublime technical section (Cyberpunk 2077), a story and a first-class gameplay (Shuenmue III) or a more open approach focused on exploration and full of surprises to discover (Fallout 4).

When analyzing the GeForce RTX 4090 I could not help but worry about this situation again, and that is that the software is not advancing to the hardware level, and this in the end is going to end up being a very serious problem. That a graphics card like this has CPU bottlenecks even at 4K resolutions depending on the game used is a clear symptom of this, and is an obvious example of developers having a score to settle.

This is not the first time this has happened, in fact it has been something quite recurrent in recent years. Without going any further, I remember that Battlefield 2042 also suffered from a huge bottleneck with a GeForce RTX 3080 Tieven at 1440p settings and with maximum ray tracing, and the same goes for Halo Infinite.

The video games we enjoy on PC are developed starting from the base of the consoles that mark the minimum base, this is a fact, and it is what has generated these bottlenecks. It is a topic that I have already commented on many times, and that our regular readers know perfectly well. Now that we have started to start the transition to PS5 and Xbox Series XS, the use of six-core and twelve-thread CPUs is becoming a reality, although there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Now that the GeForce RTX 4090 has hit the market, and that both PS5 and Xbox Series X are already showing clear signs of exhaustion, I can’t help but worry about what awaits us PC users in the coming years, and about the impact that this stagnation of video games is going to have on the use of hardware, since it is not something that is limited to the most leading, but it is even affecting levels that once would have seemed unimaginable to us.

We will see how the situation evolves, but I am clear that exclusive game developments for P should returnC that really take advantage of the potential of this platform. I know that it is not profitable for developers, and that there are many interests that influence this issue that ultimately prevent important improvements in PC games so as not to leave the consoles in a bad way, we have already seen it on many occasions, but it is the only viable way to overcome this stagnation.

Now it’s your turn, are you worried that video game development has stagnated and that consoles continue to set the pace absolutely? We read in the comments.
