Samsung details its plans to mass-produce chips with 2-nanometer technology

The company will begin mass-producing its first 2-nanometer chips for use in mobile applications in 2025.

This will be possible, among other things, due to the increase in production capacity that the group is going to register, which will be able to offer these chips to manufacturers of smartphones and tablets within two years. In addition to producing for the company, Samsung also makes chips for third parties, such as Qualcomm. Samsung will offer its production processes for 2-nanometer chips for high-performance computing from 2026, and from 2027 it will offer it for chips in the automotive sector.

According to Samsung, the second largest chipmaker in the world, with its 2-nanometer process it has experienced a 12% improvement in performance, and a 25% increase in power consumption efficiency, compared to its 3-nanometer process. . In addition, chips made with 2-nanometer technology are 5% smaller than those generated with 3-nanometer technology.

But Samsung is not going to stop there, and is already considering the dates to start using the technology for manufacturing 1.4-nanometer chips. It will be in 2027. Meanwhile, other novelties in chip manufacturing will arrive at the group, such as the start of the supply of agreements for the production of gallium nitride energy management chips, as well as 5-nanometer radio frequency chips in 2025 .

In the same year, which looks set to be a very busy one for Samsung’s chipmaking divisions, it will also start offering 8- and 14-nanometer RF chips for automotive applications.

As we have commented, all this will be possible due to its increase in production space. Specific, in 2027 it will have a “clean room” space 7.3 times larger than it was in 2021. It will be possible thanks to the expansion of his facilities in Pyeongtaek, his most advanced factory, as well as the opening of the factory that he has under construction in Taylor (Texas).
