Seagate and Phison join forces to develop new professional SSDs

Seagate Technology Holdings has confirmed an alliance with Phison to develop new professional SSD units, a very important move since we are talking about one of the largest manufacturers of mass storage solutionsSeagate, and one of the most important companies in the sector of NAND Flash controllers and storage solutions.

This is a long-term partnership, something that should strengthen and broaden the development cycles and portfolios of enterprise-class SSD solutions available. As the source of the news tells us, Seagate and Phison have been collaborating on the development of the most important SATA SSDs of the first since 2017, an alliance that was later extended to SSD solutions with PCIE Gen4 x4 interface, and also to other SSD products targeting the NAS sector.

With demand for SSDs on the rise, especially in the business sector, it’s no wonder Seagate and Phison have strengthened their partnership to create enterprise-grade SSD storage capable of delivering higher performance, higher density and high reliability. According to Jeff Fochtman, senior vice president of business and marketing at Seagate Technology:

“We integrated Seagate’s 40+ years of market-leading enterprise storage experience with Phison’s agile ability to create highly customized SSDs with which to meet the constantly evolving needs of the enterprise storage market. Seagate is very excited to be working with Phison on the development of advanced SSD technology. Our selective approach allows us to serve the broad market for performance-driven enterprise SSDs while continuing our leadership in the specialized premium gaming SSD segment.”

For his part Sebastien Jean, CTO of Phison Electronics, said:

“Phison is proud to partner with Seagate to expand our line of enterprise SSD products. Our leading in-house ASIC technology, coupled with engineering excellence, complements Seagate’s deep industry knowledge. As a sign of our commitment to this partnership, in 2020 we opened a development center in Broomfield, Colorado. Together, we will offer winning solutions for a wide range of applications including artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and 5G edge computing.”

We still do not have more details of what we can expect from this alliance between the two giants, but I think it has become quite clear that they are going to bet on offering professional SSD storage solutions personalized and optimized for specific workloads and environments.
