Sony patents a PlayStation controller centered on a smartphone

With a new generation of consoles aiming to break all records despite the great barriers it is facing, and a really interesting future for its rollbacks, it seems that Sony has some additional plans for the future of PlayStation. And it seems that the Japanese company has just patented a new console control in which we can fit our smartphone.

Shared from VGC, we find a controller that more closely resembles previous PlayStation 4 DualShock 4s than the new DualSense of PS5. As described in the document, this device would arrive as «a left hand gripping portion and a right hand gripping portion gripped by the user’s left and right hands«, In addition to a small part omitted in the images, in which«a part of the shaft that the user can tilt and detects the direction of tilt and the amount of tilt of the part of the shaft«.

In this way, this new controller could be taking not only an important step in the face of some cooperative games that already allow the use of an application for smartphones to replace the additional controls, but also could exploit some of the features of the phones such as the gyroscope, or even the screen itself. Also, presumably, the central part would also be adjustable to fit different sizes of mobile devices.

Sony Patent PlayStation smartphone controller

On the other hand, the patent of this remote also makes us think about the possibility that Sony finally wants to give it a major push to its PlayStation Now and PlayStation Remote Play services, thus testing the possible arrival of a subscription and game model in the cloud similar to the one currently offered by Xbox.

As always, remember that at the moment it is only a patent, so currently It’s not even clear if or when we’ll get to see this new PlayStation controller.Although this is undoubtedly quite positive news in light of Sony’s recent expansion into the mobile gaming market.

And it is that this patent comes in the middle of a new impulse to mobile games by the manufacturer of PlayStation. And it is that last October, Sony appointed the former head of Apple Arcade content, Nicola Sebastiani, to direct the company’s mobile operations, simultaneously with the detection of numerous job offers that indicated that the company was opening a new business unit to adapt your most popular franchises for mobile devices before next March 2022.

«We’ve been thinking about how gamers enjoy our content, and we’ve had some early success experimenting with games and mobile apps to give players more options. Mobile devices are just one of the areas we are exploring to reach millions of players beyond our platforms»Declared Jim Ryan himself in a previous interview,“PlayStation has a huge catalog of diverse source IPs that can transition to smartphone games and complement our AAA games or live service games. We are exploring the mobile market with some wonderful PlayStation franchises, so stay tuned!«.
