Soon we will see laptops with 48 GB and 96 GB of RAM

If you use Google Chrome, you will already be used to seeing how it occupies a large part of the system’s RAM. In addition, modern games increasingly ask for more, starting to establish a minimum of 16 GB. Well then soon we might see laptops who have a minimum of 48 GB of DDR5 RAM.

One of the peculiarities of the DDR5 standard is that it doubles the capacity per module with respect to DDR4. For the DDR4 standard we have that the minimum capacity per module is 8 GB, while in DDR5 it is 16 GB. This makes the capacity scale much faster.

Another of the peculiarities of DDR5 are the 24 GB modules, something never seen before. RAM modules and capacities have always been doubling (1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB…). This new capability brings with it important changes to capacity scaling.

Laptops with RAM to support modern games

It has recently been introduced Lenovo ThinkPad P16v Laptop, intended for the professional sector. Said system is characterized by having a version of up to 96GB of DDR5 RAM. It is not uncommon for these systems designed for advanced tasks to have so much memory.

Lenovo’s laptop would mount two 48 GB modules in a Dual Channel configuration. The peculiarity is that there is a variant of this laptop with 48 GB of RAM in a single module. And you will ask yourself, what is relevant about this? Well, no manufacturer has announced SODIMM modules of this capacity.

The particularity is that it would use 24 Gb DRAM chips, compared to those currently used, which are 16 Gb. This establishes that the 48 GB module would have a total of 20 24 Gb chips. In addition, these memories are designed for professionals , includes ECC error correction technology.

It would not be ruled out that in the future we see professional laptops with up to 192 GB of RAM. Although it may not make sense to you, for professional photo and/or video editors, developers or 3D designers, it makes perfect sense. These tasks can consume huge amounts of RAM.

Even game developers are losing it

An example of surreal requirements is in the game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Said game recommends at least 32 GB of RAM, and it was not exactly the first. Diablo IV, for example, for 4K resolution only asks for 16 GB, which is more reasonable.

Just yesterday we commented that the 8 GB GDDR6 of the Xbox Series S is not enough for Borderlands 3. The game indicated to users insufficient memory in some cases, it is not something recurring. But it is an indication that something is not right in the development of video games.

We can also remember some of the latest video game releases. The game STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor has been cataloged by many as the worst launch of the year and of the decade. A poorly optimized game disaster with a brutal amount of bugs and problems. Nor was the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 and other recent games much better.

Denotes that something is not right within the video game industry. Rushing for releases with unrealistic deadlines, without the slightest optimization of the games or the forced inclusion of new technologies would be some of the problems that end in brutal fiascoes.
