Star Wars will add three new movies, but not a trilogy

When talking about Star Wars, and even more so if number three is mentioned, immediately, almost as a reflex, the word trilogy comes to mind. And it is normal, of course, since the backbone of one of the most iconic sagas in the world of cinema, and which has since transcended to many other fields, It’s a trilogy of trilogiesYou know, in order of release, the original (episodes IV to VI), the prequel (episodes I to III) and the outcome? (episodes VII to IX). And yes, I put it between question marks because we are talking about Star Wars, so you never know if something has finished or if, on the contrary, they will surprise us in the future by extending the story.

Be that as it may, very good news arrives for the warsies (or not, depending on their level of openness to new productions that expand the universe of the saga), since the Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 that is taking place these days in London has been the space chosen by Lucasfilm to share its plans for near future in the cinematographic field and, as I have already anticipated, Three new unconnected films await us (although yes, obviously, in the common space of the Star Wars universe), about which some interesting details have been revealed… very few, yes, you have to maintain the intrigue and expectations.

Before going to the point with each one of them, a very interesting aspect is that Lucasfilm is increasingly committed to productions that are located, spatio-temporally outside the date range between Episode I and Episode IX. Personally, it seems to me a great success for two reasons. The first is that there are already many productions, of various types, focused on that period. However, moving away (be it very little) from it increases the possibilities by several orders of magnitude.

The second reason is that introducing new narrative elements in that period can (and sometimes does) generate inconsistencies in the canon (the official narrative), which is a headache for more people than we might think at first. By focusing the stories of these new films on other periods, we avoid this inconvenience, which is minor but still there.

Star Wars will add three new movies, but not a trilogy

What is cooking at Lucasfilms? Well three Star Wars movies, all three live-action (live action, as it has become popular to say now to refer to the fact that they are not animated works), which will be led by James Mangold (Wolverine, Logan), Dave Filoni (a historic “of the house”, with The Mandalorian, The Boba Fett book and Star Wars Rebels, among others) and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face). There is still no information on the dates scheduled for their premiere.

We do know in which period each one will be located. James Mangold’s will take a great leap back in time, as it will take us to The dawn of the Jedi order, a very little explored and tremendously promising period; Dave Filoni’s will focus on the new republic and will close the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and other series in the saga; and the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be developed a few years after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalkerand we will see Rey try create a new jedi order (I already said that with Lucasfilms we can never take a story for totally closed, right?)
