Yesterday, Monday, April 3, International Mobile Phone Day was celebrated, which commemorates the date on which it was carried out the first call through a mobile phone, in 1973. Among the main objectives of this commemoration is the increase in the sustainability and durability of these devices, whose environmental impact shows alarming figures, according to the company specialized in refurbishing mobile devices, CertiDeal.
However, 50 years after the first cellular communication took place, the telecommunications technology industry has experienced dizzying growth. All this thanks to the increase in the demand for telephones and especially smart mobiles or smartphones, their functionalities and an increasingly continuous use during our professional day and, above all, staff.
The manufacture of a mobile generates 85 kilos of emissions, on average
In this global event, the question of how many mobile phones are there in the world may arise, to which there seems to be no clear answer. Although there is no unanimity regarding the total number of smartphones today, the figures oscillate around 6,000 and 7,000 million mobile users, data that represents approximately between 70% and 80% of the world population.
Faced with such a large number of smartphones, it is increasingly common for public and private institutions and the whole of society to show concern about making smartphones more sustainable and eco-responsible, and have a longer useful life, to avoid mass production that damages the resources of our planet.
In this sense, it is important to remember that 95% of the emissions from mobile phones in their first year of use come from manufacturing processes, the extraction of raw materials and the shipment of the devices, according to a study by Deloitte. Likewise, its production generates an average of 85 kilos of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions into the atmosphere.
Iphones, the best-selling refurbished
For all these reasons and in the current scenario, the renewed smartphone is no longer a taboo and little by little it is becoming part of society’s consumption habits. In this way, specifically 56% of Spaniards are willing to buy refurbished mobiles. The population is also willing to bet on technology used in the use of tablets, in this case a percentage of 53%. The CertiDeal barometer, published in November, also points to economic savings as the main reason for the purchase, followed by the guarantee equivalent to that of a new product and concern for sustainability.
If we ask ourselves which are the best-selling refurbished mobiles today, the answer may be as expected: iphone It is the brand most requested and acquired by the company in the used or reconditioned sector, according to CertiDeal sources. In this way, the refurbished mobile devices most purchased by Spanish users were the iPhone 12 and the 64 Gb iPhone 11. In 2023 it is expected that they will also be positioned in the ranking the iPhone 12 Pro model.
Likewise, among the specifications most appreciated by consumers of refurbished technology are the following reasons: “They are high-end mobiles, with good camera quality and a detailed display, which allow savings of up to 70% compared to the original price, and also with the same guarantee as a new one, that is, a 3-year guarantee”highlights Iñigo Giner, Country Manager of CertiDeal for Spain.
