Despite his best efforts, Colin Farrell failed to convince Warner Bros to let his character smoke.

In just a few days, the public will be able to discover the new Warner Bros film dedicated to the dark knight. After Ben Affleck, it’s Robert Pattinson’s turn to put on the costume. The actor, who went through several popular licenses like Twilight Where Harry Potter, plays Bruce Wayne in his first two years in Gotham. A Batman on the fringes of the DC cinematic universe, which promises to be on the border between action film and film noir.

Alongside Pattinson, several big names in the 7th art will follow one another, starting with Colin Farrell who will camp the Penguin. A mythical antagonist of the license on paper, several times appeared on the screen, the character has nevertheless been revisited to stick to the strict specifications of Warner Bros. During an interview, he explained in particular that his character will not appear on the screen with a cigar, an element that is nevertheless emblematic of the villain.

“The big studios make the big decisions on these matters, like the presence of cigarettes in such films. I fought valiantly for a cigar, even offered that it not be lit. They told me no.”

An introduction before the series?

The character of the Penguin is also very different from those that we have been able to discover on the small or the big screen, with Danny DeVito in Batman: The Challenge or Robin Lord Taylor in Gotham. It’s more about exploring the basics of a plot that could be developed in the future.

Last September, we learned that HBO Max was working on a series inspired by The Batman. According to rumors, the Penguin could be at the heart of the plot. If the project has not yet been formalized, Colin Farrell would not be against the idea of ​​finding Oz for new adventures.

“The Penguin that we meet does not yet embody the Penguin that we know, the one from the comics and previous films. I’d love to explore that a bit more, because you know right now he’s just a Falcone soldier, but he has big ambitions.”

Appointment on March 2 at the cinema to discover The Batman. Highly anticipated, the feature film is directed by Matt Reeves (Planet of the Apes: The Showdown). Alongside Colin Farrell and Robert Pattinson, we will find Zoë Kravitz in the skin of Catwoman, John Turturro in that of Carmine Falcone and Andy Serkis in Alfred Pennyworth.
