The Synology DS224+ promises to be the perfect NAS for home, know its features

The manufacturer Synology has today introduced a new NAS server model for home users, its name is Synology DS224+ and it has quite powerful hardware, so that home users can perform their backups, use multimedia applications and even container virtualization without having any problems. This new equipment is perfect if you don’t need too much internal storage, since it only has two bays to house hard drives, but yes, you can install large-capacity hard drives of more than 16TB each without any problem. Do you want to know all the features of this new NAS?

NAS servers from the manufacturer Synology are very loved by users thanks to their dsm operating system, a very fast operating system, efficient with hardware resources and very easy to use, since it will allow us to carry out any configuration through the graphical user interface. With the new DSM operating system, we will be able to not only install dozens of apps from the Synology store, but also from third-party repositories, and even use Docker intensively to have more apps on the NAS.

Main features

This new NAS server has a powerful processor Intel Celeron J4125has four cores running at 2.0GHz base speed, with the possibility of reaching up to 2.7GHz in turbo mode. This processor has a Integrated UHD Intel 600 GPU To do hardware transcoding, it also has AES-NI hardware encryption acceleration, with the aim of managing AES-encrypted data very efficiently and quickly. With this processor, we will be able to carry out tasks as demanding as video playback through the Plex Media Server, encrypt the volume or use protocols that have encryption, and all this at the maximum possible speed.

This team has a 2GB soldered on board RAM DDR4, however, we can expand this RAM with an additional 4GB since we have a slot for it. Bearing in mind that the DSM operating system is very well optimized, if we expand the RAM memory we will be able to run dozens of Docker containers inside it, to get the most out of this equipment.

Regarding the storage of this equipment, we have a total of 2 bays to accommodate 2.5” hard drives or SSD drives inside. Taking into account that we only have two bays, we can configure them with different RAID types such as RAID 0 and RAID 1, in addition, we can also configure it in JBOD and even as individual disks. Unfortunately, this model does not have M.2 NVMe slots to improve read and write speeds with the SSD cache of the DSM operating system.

The connectivity of this NAS server is quite complete. In the local network we will have a total of two Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN, we can configure these ports individually or use Link Aggregation to increase the real speed of the link, of course, it also supports connection failover. This kit also incorporates one USB 3.2 Gen 1 5Gbps port on the front, perfect for making quick backups inside the NAS, or for extracting data. Also has one 5Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the back of the computerwe can connect both external hard drives, UPS and any other device that recognizes and supports the DSM operating system.

On the back of the NAS server we also have the RESET button to restore the NAS server to factory settings, as well as the Kensington connector that will allow us to prevent equipment theft. In this area we also have the DC power connector, since the power supply is external. In this rear area we also have a 92mm diameter fan to extract hot air from inside the NAS, and keep the hard drives properly cooled.

This model has really small dimensions, it only measures 165 mm x 108 mm x 232.2 mm, the weight of this equipment without hard drives is only 1.3Kg.

The DSM operating system is version 7.2, the latest available from the manufacturer Synology that has all the security improvements, system optimization and applications from the manufacturer, and many interesting new features for users of this equipment.
