The Tesla Model Y can now accelerate faster, but this option costs an arm and a leg

The Tesla Model Y produced in the Texas Gigafactory can now accelerate faster. It goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, compared to 5 seconds previously. It becomes the fastest Model Y, ahead of the one manufactured in Fremont. But this improvement is not free, like all the options of a Tesla. It is invoiced by the car manufacturer 2000 dollars.

Did you know ? Not all Teslas are created equal. We are obviously not talking about the differences between the 3, S, X and Y models. We are talking about the small variations between certain series of the same vehicle, but produced in different factories. Let’s take a concrete example. The Model Y coming out of Fremont, in the historic Tesla factory, and the Model Y, built in the new Texas factory that Elon Musk inaugurated in April 2022. They are not the same cars.

Indeed, the first is equipped with a battery integrating 2170 energy cells, while the second has 4680. Of course, the Texan Model Y does not benefit from a battery twice as large: the cells are simply more small. Another difference between the two vehicles: acceleration. The Fremont Model Y goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour (this corresponds to 95 kilometers per hour) in 4.8 seconds. And the Texas Model Y?

The Texas Model Y’s Acceleration Is Improved… But It’s Expensive

Today, the Texas Model Y is slightly slower in reaching that speed. He needs 5 seconds, while its cousin goes under the 5 second mark. The difference is not significant, but it made the first owners of the Texan model wince. This gave Elon Musk an idea: why not improve the acceleration of the Model Y… and charge for this option?

Indeed, several American sites, including the YouTube channel Spoken Reviews, have confirmed the arrival of a new option in the configurator of the Tesla Model Y: improved acceleration. This option, available only on the Texas model of the Model Y, allows you to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds only. Be one 16% reduction the time required, which is considerable. In the video of the channel, which you can find at the end of this article, it is confirmed that it still costs 2000 dollars. Which seems really exaggerated for what it brings (especially since the speed of the car is limited).

Tesla’s business model is very different from the “traditional” car market. It is based on the sale of vehicles and multiple options, such as improved acceleration or AutoPilot (whose fully autonomous version, which is not yet complete, is billed at 10,000 dollars across the Atlantic). Rumors claim that other hidden options could appear in the Model Y, including increased range, estimated today at 279 miles (450 kilometers) on the Texas version and 330 EPA miles (531 kilometers) on Fremont’s Long Range version (compared to 303 miles for the Performance version).
