The Vivo X Fold is official: a competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in XXL format

Vivo presented on April 11, 2022 the X Fold, its first smartphone with a foldable screen. Having already been the subject of an official teaser, the smartphone is positioned in the same segment as Oppo’s Find N and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. But one of the particularities of the X Fold is its size: its internal screen measures 8.03 inches. Either the largest foldable screen on the market, just ahead of Huawei’s Mate X2. And what else ? Answer.

Two weeks ago, we reported in our columns the official teaser of the X Fold, Vivo’s first foldable smartphone. On the occasion of this teaser, the brand revealed some details on this very symbolic model. First of all, its design, very high-end with vegan leather for one of the versions, a borderless external screen and a huge photo module bearing the logo of the German optician Carl Zeiss.

We had also seen a photo module whose technical characteristics seemed to be taken from the Vivo X70 launched in September in China (opening at f/1.75 for the main sensor, telephoto lens up to 125 mm for a zoom ratio that goes up to 5x, ultra 14 mm wide-angle with aspherical lens). When the teaser was posted on Chinese social media, Vivo was meeting its fans on April 11, 2022 to know more. And it is precisely today! So let’s find out what exactly it is about.

The Vivo X Fold is a giant foldable smartphone

The Vivo X Fold is therefore a smartphone with two screens, one of which folds inwards, like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. But there is a difference in size: while Oppo’s Find N is intended to be being smaller than the Fold 3, the Fold X is bigger. Its internal screen measures 8.03 inches, the largest size today, surpassing the record of the Mate X2 and its 8 inches by a short head. The external screen is also very large: 6.53 inches in 21:9 format. The X Fold is therefore a giant smartphone!

The internal screen rests on a slab AMOLED LTPO whose refresh rate varies from 1 to 120 Hz. It is HDR10+ compatible. Practically in 4:3 format, it offers a definition equivalent to Quad HD+: 1916 x 2160 pixels, for a resolution of 360 pixels per inch. Outside, there is also a 120 Hz AMOLED panel. Its definition is Full HD + for a resolution that is also around 400 pixels per inch. Its frequency must also vary, but less widely.

The hinge is slightly different from Samsung’s models since it allows the phone to be folded completely, with no gap between the two parts of the phone when it is closed. Another difference with the competition: Vivo has integrated two fingerprint readers, one under each screen (center for external, bottom right for internal). Like Samsung and Oppo, Vivo has adapted Origin OS to take advantage of the X Fold’s form factor, especially when it’s half open.

The technical sheet of the Vivo X Fold is worthy of a very high end

Inside, you find a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 : Unlike Oppo, Vivo adopts Qualcomm’s latest SoC in its flagship model. We will see what the impact on the price will be. The component is accompanied by 12 GB RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of non-expandable storage. Both batteries provide a total capacity of 4600mAh, more than Samsung and Oppo. Vivo promises a battery life of 13 hours in video, 21 hours in audio calls and 23 hours in eBook reading. The phone is compatible 66 watt fast charge and 50 watt wireless charge.

Let’s go to the photo. Today we can complete the indications offered by Vivo in the teaser. Here is the exact configuration:

  • Main sensor 50 megapixelslens opening at f/1.8, optical stabilizer, phase detection autofocus and laser autofocus
  • Ultra wide-angle sensor 48 megapixelslens opening at f/2.2, 112° angle of view
  • Sensor 12 megapixels (portrait specialist) with telephoto lens opening at f/2.0 (2x zoom), phase detection autofocus
  • Sensor 8 megapixel (detail photo) with periscopic telephoto lens opening at f/3.4 (5x optical zoom), phase detection autofocus, optical stabilizer
  • selfie sensor 16 megapixelslens opening at f/2.5 (there are obviously two selfie sensors, but only one is listed on the official technical sheet)

This is a very nice configuration offered here by Vivo, comparable to that of a Galaxy S22 Ultra (which also offers two telephoto lenses, including a periscope).

Prices higher than those of the Oppo Find N

So here is a technical sheet and an extremely ambitious proposal. It obviously comes with a price that is not so ambitious. 8999 yuan in 12+256 GB version and 9999 yuan in the 12+512 GB version. Or 1300 euros for the first version and 1440 euros for the second. For comparison, the Find N (which we took in hand here) is sold cheaper, at 7699 yuan and 8999 yuan in 8 + 256 GB and 12 + 512 GB versions. advantage of Vivo. Note that the X Fold, like the Find N, is currently exclusive to China.
