TPNET Awards 2022 “Green IT”: IBM

The implementation of Green IT programs can help companies and organizations reduce your carbon footprint and improve your sustainability. As many know, some classic practices in this area include the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, such as low-power servers and network equipment, or the adoption of virtualization and cloud storage practices to reduce the use of physical hardware.

In this field, more and more technology companies are designing all kinds of programs that make it easier for companies to develop their own Green IT policies. Companies like IBM, which this year won the award “Green IT” in our TPNET Awards 2022 they stand out in fact for policies such as:

  • Implementation of energy efficient technologies in their data centers and IT equipment to reduce their energy consumption.
  • Adoption of virtualization and cloud storage practices to reduce the use of physical hardware.
  • Promotion of the use of renewable energy in its operations and support for renewable energy projects around the world.
  • Recycling and reuse of obsolete or unnecessary IT equipment to reduce waste generation.
  • Collaboration with organizations and companies to develop sustainable technological solutions and promote the adoption of Green IT practices.

This year he also launches his program IBM Sustainability Accelerator, in which it applies IBM technologies such as hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence, and collaborates through an ecosystem of experts to improve and expand projects focused on populations vulnerable to environmental threats, such as climate change .

After evaluating more than 100 proposals from around the world, IBM has selected five organizations to become partners in the clean energy program.

  • United Nations Development Program (UNDP): UNDP collaborates with IBM to increase access to sustainable, affordable and reliable energy in African countries, focusing on the most marginalized.
  • Sustainable energy for all: IBM is working with Sustainable Energy for All to build a smart model that projects energy needs based on current and future human activity.
  • Net Zero Atlantic: Net Zero Atlantic is collaborating with IBM to create an interactive digital tool that will show the environmental and socioeconomic impact of possible future energy systems in Nova Scotia.
  • Miyakojima City Government: the Miyakojima City Government is working with IBM to support the development of a renewable energy strategy that includes a microgrid on the island of Miyakojima, a remote community facing severe weather problems due to typhoons in Japan.
  • Environment Without Borders Foundation: Environment Without Borders Foundation’s collaboration with IBM will aim to develop a platform for forecasting, tracking and communicating clean energy usage options in Egypt.

As explained by the American multinational, this work not only helps the world to achieve the goal of UN SDG number 7, but may also contribute to a broader global energy transition.
