VOD news 08/22: ‘Dune’, a visual odyssey

VOD News brings you the best releases of the week on Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+… And we are already entering the eighth week of the year with dunes as a featured release, but with much more cloth to cut, even when the picture is a bit strange. Let’s go with it.

HBO Max takes, therefore, one more week the position of honor of the section, but for a compelling reason and not just for mere dismissal, and that is that dunes its alot dunesas much as this dunes be only half or a third of what is expected, as Bilbo Baggins would say.

That’s right: the dunes by Denis Villeneuve has finally come to HBO Max… and unlike what I always do, which is to extend myself a little more with the content that takes the head of the section, this time it will not be like that. For a simple reason: dunes It was my favorite movie of last year, as I reflected in the MC space with the best movies of 2021. I already extended there and I’ll leave it there, adding that I hope for the sequel as soon as possible, because fidelity to Frank Herbert’s novel and the visual delight with which this exceptional science fiction universe has been captured deserves to wrap it up. We continue with Netflix, which does not reach the level of Dune by any means, but makes up for it with a lot of original and exclusive releases among which there is an abundance of… mediocrity? Let’s say that, within the lot, there is a bit of everything, including such interesting things as Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film, parallel mothersthe second season of the sitcom space forcethe animated film starring the popular Rabbids, Ali Wong’s new monologue… However, there is a title that stands out above all else.

Yes sir: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre It is resurrected on Netflix and… the massacre is being carried out by the film itself, categorized by a large percentage of critics and the public as a real snafu. Be careful because it is not a remake of the original, which there have already been, but of a strange sequel located in the present, with all that this entails: a diverse cast like a Benetton advertisement, various clichés around the prudish sensibility of these days… But don’t rush if these things flake you, because Leatherface doesn’t mind anyone: he’ll hack you to pieces with a machete with total dedication regardless of your ethnicity, gender, creed or political affiliation. Because of the classic nature of the title, but also because of the renewed touch and because of the gore that this rehash brings us, here it is…

Let’s go now with the Apple TV + offer for this week and although it only brings a couple of things, both sound interesting, each in its own way.

Separation It is a new original series from Apple TV + that has just arrived, but that is already being liked a lot and that would be framed in the suspenseful drama with hints of science fiction, or directly in dystopia. It is directed by nothing more and nothing less than Ben Stiller -the comedian, yes- and has a top-notch cast with names like John Turturro (the big lebowski, Barton Fink), Patricia Arquette (point blank love. Medium) or Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can. Sleepy Hollow), although the leading role is played by a rather unknown Adam Scott (Big Little Lies, ghosted). As for your argument… worth BlackMirror. And I say no more than the trailer says it all.

However, the fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselone of the most successful series on the platform, which adds interesting things to the catalog, such as the first part of the fourth season of Attack the titans or the British classic downton abbey completely, among others.
