Meta adds Keep in Chat, a handy feature to WhatsApp’s ephemeral messages on Android and iOS, somewhat equivalent to Saved Messages. As their name suggests, they allow you to save one or more exchanges in a dedicated folder on the smartphone. To benefit from this, ephemeral messages must already be activated in the conversation (because otherwise, all messages are effectively accessible all the time).

Note that if you want to turn a normal WhatsApp conversation into a conversation with ephemeral messages, you will need to manually delete previous messages: ephemeral mode only takes effect after enabling this setting. If all conditions are met, you can now save a normally temporary message. That said, there is a condition to be fulfilled, and not the least.

WhatsApp allows ephemeral messages to be saved, but safeguards are in place to prevent abuse

The implementation of ephemeral messages responded to a demand for greater control over the confidentiality of messages. Isn’t the possibility of preventing one or more messages from disappearing being totally counter-productive? Well no, because the person whose message you want to save must approve the operation.

WhatsApp explains how this mechanism works on the company’s blog: “For this to work, the sender will be notified when someone saves a message, and they will have the opportunity to object to the decision. If you have decided that your message cannot be kept by others, your decision is final. […] the message will be deleted when the time expires”. Will this security measure be sufficient? Nothing is less certain, because the most malevolent spirits always find a way to achieve their ends. The “Keep in Chat” or “Kept Messages” function of WhatsApp on Android and iOS begins to be deployed today.
