AMD has announced the series of processors Ryzen and Athlon 7020Cbelonging to the Mendocino family and mainly oriented to teams chromebook. Because of this, we find processors that will focus on laptops and efficiency in order to make the autonomy offered by the battery as long as possible.
Before starting to detail the features, AMD has mentioned the growth that ChromeOS has experienced in recent years in terms of market share. In fact, the global share of Google’s operating system for PCs already exceeds that of Linux, largely thanks to the success that Chromebooks have achieved in the educational sectors of some developed countries.
Delving into the technological features of the Ryzen and Ahtlon 7020C series of processors, they are manufactured with a 6nm process and employ the Zen 2 architecture at the processor level to reach a maximum frequency of 4.3GHz and RDNA 2 as the architecture for graphics processing. Refering to autonomy, AMD has announced a maximum of 19.5 hours. The purpose is to offer processors that offer “uncompromised performance and battery life to meet the productivity demands of day-to-day.”
Ryzen and Ahtlon 7020C is made up, at least initially, of four processors that we are going to mention below along with their main features:
- AMD Athlon Silver 7120C: two physical cores, two threads (one thread per core), a base frequency of 2.4GHz, a maximum working speed of 3.5GHz, 3MB of cache, a TDP of 15 watts and Radeon 610M integrated graphics.
- AMD Athlon Gold 7220C: two physical cores, four threads (two threads per core), a base frequency of 2.4GHz, a maximum working speed of 3.7GHz, 5MB of cache, a TDP of 15 watts and Radeon 610M integrated graphics.
- AMD Ryzen 3 7320C: four physical cores, eight threads (two threads per core), a base frequency of 2.4GHz, a maximum working speed of 4.1GHz, 6MB of cache, a TDP of 15 watts and Radeon 610M integrated graphics.
- AMD Ryzen 5 7520C: four physical cores, eight threads (two threads per core), a base frequency of 2.8GHz, a maximum working speed of 4.3GHz, 6MB of cache, a TDP of 15 watts and Radeon 610M integrated graphics.
Compared to the AMD Ryzen 3 3250C, the new AMD Ryzen 3 7320C is capable of doubling the performance (approximately) in the Web-GL Aquarium 15000 Fish and multicore tests with Geekbench 5. In addition to improving performance, the autonomy offered by the latest model is, according to the manufacturer, 17.1 hours versus the 10.7 hours provided with the older processor.
Two other comparisons exposed by AMD are the Athlon Silver 7120C against the MediaTek Kompanio 520 and the AMD Ryzen 3 7320C against the MediaTek Kompanio 1380. In the first case it can be seen that the AMD processor is clearly superior in performance and offers autonomy only slightly lower, while, in the second case, the red giant’s processor is superior at all levels. Of course, we remember that these comparisons come from AMD itself.
Another model that has been the subject of comparisons is the Intel Core i3-N305, aimed at the same segments as this new series from AMD. Here, according to the data provided by the person in charge of Radeon, we find ourselves with a scenario similar to the previous ones, but with a less bulky advantage on the part of the AMD Ryzen 3 7320C.
AMD has announced two teams implementing models of these new processors. For starters there is the Dell Latitude 3445 Chromebook, which will use different models of the line (not specified), will support Wi-Fi 6 along with Bluetooth 5.2 and can equip up to 256GB of data storage and up to 16GB of RAM. On the other side is the ASUS Chromebook CM34 FLIP (CM3401)which employs an AMD Ryzen 7520C processor, a 14-inch display operating with a 16:10 aspect ratio, an optional one-touch fingerprint sensor, a Full HD camera with privacy shutter, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.
The Ryzen and Ahtlon 7020C series of processors promises to be a boost for the same ranges of Chromebook computers that are currently on the market. On the other hand, and although computers with these processors do not have to end up being compatible with Steam, AMD is more interested than ever in chipping away at ChromeOS, since this operating system uses the standard Linux graphics stack, which in turn it is the one used by the Steam Deck with SteamOS 3. That factor can make its processors very attractive if one day Chromebook computers manage to spread beyond the sectors in which they are popular.
