AMD Joins Meta’s Evenstar Mobile Network Enhancement Program

GoalFacebook matrix, and amdhave announced that they will work together in a program in charge of development of a mobile internet infrastructure whose purpose is to reduce the costs of installation, start-up and operation of mobile stations for mobile networks. They will do it under the program evenstarlaunched by Meta in 2020. AMD was not part of it originally, but entered it with its purchase of Xilinx, which closed last March.

The Evenstar program is focused on development of general purpose RAN network reference designs, for both 4G and 5G networks, from the Open RAN ecosystem. One of the initiatives taken by the program is that, instead of betting on the sale of remote radio units (RRU) as a single package, as has been traditionally done, in this project they have chosen to decouple the hardware of these RRU units. , its distribution unit and unit control software.

In this way, mobile network operators can deploy other types of solutions to be able to bring Internet access to even more people than they provide coverage with traditional solutions, thanks to the greater flexibility to do so.

The agreement between AMD and Meta is already bearing fruit, as AMD has already announced that with Xilinx UltraScale + RFSoC it has already made possible the development of several Evenstar radio units to contribute to the development of global mobile network infrastructure for 5G networks. and 4G. Eventstar radio units with Xilinx Zynq RFSoC architecture offer enough flexibility to work with various radio configurations and emerging standards, so radio vendors can adapt to various opportunities and changes in the industry.

Jaydeep Ranade, Director of Meta Wirelees Engineeringhas shown his joy for «view AMD RFSoC solutions integrated into Evenstar Radio Units in collaboration with our ecosystem partners. As we drive open, disaggregated solutions for the industry, we look forward to new ways to accelerate the pace of innovation as networks evolve.«.

For its part, Dan Mansur, Group Vice President, Communications and Data Centers, AMDnotes that “the development of Evenstar radios with our integrated flexible radio technology is a significant achievement for AMD. We are proud to be an ecosystem partner with Meta Connectivity and look forward to continuing our collaborative designs for Evenstar to deliver flexible, scalable and efficient wireless solutions.«.
