An external SSD is more convenient, but is it just as fast?

We all know that having a external SSDSometimes, it is much more convenient, especially if we do not use it as an Operating System, but as a data transfer unit or physical cloud. However, is it as fast and effective as a internal SSD?, or, on the contrary, does using it this way have its disadvantages.

We are going to analyze the factors that can affect their speed and performance and thus reach a real conclusion as to whether these types of units are more effective in one location or another. It is something that you may not have considered… and there can be a big difference, especially for one point.

External SSD or Internal SSD?

The first thing to take into account is your needs. If you obviously want to incorporate your Operating System in it, in addition to important system files, it will be absurd to consider an external SSD, whatever the assessment we arrive at, since it will be much more insecure and possible to disconnect having it hooked outside the tower.

Now, if you are thinking of purchasing one as a second unit or simply as a better “pendrive” to transfer your files from one place to another or as a backup copy to which you add the important things on your computer, then we can consider the doubt.

There are differences between them, at least depending on the PC we have, for different reasons. The first will be the speed of the ports. I’ve seen people plugging simple USB sticks into the front of their tower, with 2.0 ports, while the same ones were 3.0. That is, they were losing a lot speed and obtaining the same result as with a much worse product. So the type of connection and the port that we assign to it will be important.

Now, there are external connections as fast as internal ones. In that case, at least in terms of speed, we would not have any difference, since currently we can purchase very fast external SSD drives, just as fast as an internal one.

However, we return to the point from before, its use and risks. Having it on the outside will only cause much more dirt to accumulate, as well as heat, because it will not have air flow or cooling as it does inside the tower. It will depend more on your ambient temperature and your exposure to sunlight, which can sometimes be very high.

In summary and as a personal recommendation, first check the speed and type of SSD you want, to see if there is a clear difference between one option or another. Once you know, think about whether you are going to use that unit a lot or keep it in a drawer, and with that information, analyze whether it is better to have it installed inside the tower or not. For my taste, except in very specific cases, an internal SSD is a much better option, and if we need to move things quickly, we will always have pendrives, which today are very cheap and we have very high capacities.
