Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple with Steve Jobs, has not been kind to Tesla and its self-driving technology. During an interview for CNN, the billionaire compared Autopilot to an “AI that tries to kill you whenever it can”.

In recent months, we have seen a rise in AI-powered services, starting with ChatGPT of course, without forgetting Bard, Google’s proposal, or Midjourney and Amazon Bedrock.

But the enthusiasm generated by these technologies quickly gave way, in favor of multiple fears for the future of humanity. Recently, Geoffrey Hinton, considered the father of artificial neural networks, rightly decided to slam the door of Google to alert the world to the dangers of AI.

And these criticisms of AI are also found in other big names in Tech, starting with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple. Indeed, the former collaborator of Steve Jobs was invited on May 3, 2023 by the CNN channel to discuss various topics, including AI or Elon Musk.

Wozniak hails Tesla’s ambitions…

Regarding Tesla and its current owner, the co-creator of the Apple brand first took off his hat: “I admire some of the things he’s done for the world, moving us towards electric cars”. Nevertheless, the compliments very quickly ceased in favor of harsh criticism at against Elon Musk and his many broken promisesespecially on autonomous driving.

Indeed, Steve Wozniak explains that he was one of the first to believe the word of the boss of SpaceX: “I believed the things he said, that a car was going to drive itself across the country by the end of 2016“. Only and like many users, Steve Wozniak saw the reality of things, with deadlines constantly pushed back and misleading claims about the true capabilities of Autopilot.

But Steve Wozniak had other cartridges in reserve. In effect, the engineer fired live ammunition on the Autopilot and FSD, Tesla’s self-driving technologies. For good reason, the one who owned a Tesla Model S in 2017 destroys the brand in this specific area:

I really believed in these things, and it’s not even close to reality. And if you want an AI study gone wrong, taking a lot of claims and trying to kill you every time it can, buy a Tesla.” Well, you will understand, Steve Wozniak does not go by the back of the spoon to mention here the many road accidents where the Autopilot was involved.

Be careful however, it is necessary to question the words. It should be remembered that the investigations carried out by the American authorities such as the NHTSA have often shown that the driver’s negligence was the cause of the accident, not the technology.
