Clara Sauri, from Synology: “We recommend SMEs follow the 3-2-1 strategy”

The digital data has not stopped growing, in recent years. This has led to the development and adoption of systems that store, protect, and manage vast amounts of information. It is an opportunity and a risk, at the same time, that not only affects large companies, but also SMEs.

Furthermore, as our colleagues at MCPRO point out, threats that come from both cyberattacks and hardware failures can cause data loss at incalculable cost. Hence the need to use advanced techniques, such as Backup 3-2-1, for disaster prevention and in general as advanced mass storage and data management solutions. To delve into this problem, we have spoken with Clara Sauri, Product Manager for Spain and Portugal at Synology.

MuyPymes: Do SMEs know the value of their data?

Clara Sauri: Companies do know its value, but perhaps not all are aware of how “easy” it is to lose it. This may be due to an external attack; as it can also be the reason for a human error or a technical failure, etc. We have a tendency to believe that such things won’t happen to us until they do.

Currently, there are many companies that are already adopting the appropriate infrastructures, but there are still many others that must take the leap.

MuyPymes: Why should small and medium businesses install a backup infrastructure?

Clara Sauri: Mainly, to avoid losing your data and not having to face the negative consequences that this entails, which can become irreversible for a company.

MuyPymes: What would this installation consist of?

Clara Sauri: What we always recommend is to follow what we call the 3-2-1 strategy. This consists of having a minimum of three copies, located in two different sites, and at least one in the cloud. The ideal would be to have backup copies of the data on-premises and also in the cloud, so that we make sure that it is practically impossible to lose our data.

They can do it very easily with Synology, using one of our NAS and contracting cloud services Synology C2. This allows you to sync data from your computer to the NAS, and send a copy from the NAS to C2 Storage.

MuyPymes: How would it affect the daily work of an SME to install a system of these characteristics?

Clara Sauri: The technical knowledge required to implement this system is not very high, especially not with us, who are known for the simplicity of our intuitive operating system. In addition, once everything is configured, the backup tasks are executed behind the scenes and do not affect the day-to-day of the workers.

It is pertinent to note that having synchronized data accessible from different devices, for example, has a positive impact on the workflow.

MuyPymes: What would happen if a small business was attacked and did not have a copy of its data?

Clara Sauri: Once we have been the victim of a ransomware attack, there is little we can do to recover the encrypted data. The ideal is, as we say, to have a backup that allows us to recover this data and continue working normally.

If we do not have this copy, we either pay the ransom requested by the data hijacker (which does not guarantee that we will recover them either); or we lose our data and face the consequences.

It is important that companies are aware that no one is 100% protected from these types of attacks. Even if you have a very advanced security system, there is always a risk.

MuyPymes: Could workers on the move or teleworking also access that backup, wherever they are?

Clara Sauri: Yes, of course. For example, with our Synology QuickConnect and Synology VPN Server solutions, which guarantee remote access to the NAS and allow you to work from anywhere with the same comfort as if you were on the office network.

Furthermore, assuming that there is a problem with a NAS, as the backup would also be in the cloud, the system administrator will be able to access and recover it from anywhere in the world.
