We all have an Alexa device in our home. Either an older model with few features or a more modern version with even a screen. All of them give a very good service, but, Have you ever wondered how much it consumes to have them plugged in 24 hours a day?
We always wonder if the red light on the television overspends at the end of the year, or if our computer consumes something when it is turned off, but nobody wonders about other devices that probably have a much greater impact. Today we are going to see the reality of “Alexa”.
What is its power?
First of all, to find out how much light our Alexa uses, we must know what its power is. In the product specifications you can see what its maximum consumption is, but we are interested in knowing its average at rest.
An old and simple model like the first Echo Dot uses about 1.30W while a higher one like the Show can reach 3W or even 4W in idle mode (much more if we are using it and playing a video).
How much do you consume?
Knowing how much minimum power it needs permanently for its operation, we will only have to calculate in a simple way the cost in our electricity bill to have it always connected.
In the first case, a simple Echo Dot, we will spend 1.30W x 24h x 30 days. This result would give us a minimum monthly consumption very close to 1KW, which depending on our contract It could come to about €0.30 per month.
On the other hand, the top model could consume 3KW which would already be close to €1 per month.
All this without taking into account its operation, but only connected and without having used it even once. If we play music, ask a lot of questions or even play videos on models with a screen, the expenses can multiply very quickly. As well as having more than one device in the same house.
A more realistic example and on an annual basis if we had these two models with a reasonable average use, it would give us a annual cost of about €25 of electricity. Something to keep in mind, since, although it is not excessive consumption, it is quite significant and will make us consider which model to buy and especially if we need more than one.
In general terms, a device like Alexa consumes more than a computer or even a TV on Stand-bysince due to its characteristics it always has the microphone on waiting to hear the famous activation word.
