E3 2022: the big video game fair will take place online only

E3 2022 will take place online in its entirety. The organizers preferred to favor a 100% digital edition because of the health crisis. This is the second consecutive year that this formula has been chosen.

E3 Los Angeles is historically the largest exhibition dedicated to video games. It is held every year in June. For this 2022 edition, ESA, which is in charge of the organization, chose a 100% digital format. A decision made as the Omicron variant wreaks havoc around the world.

The announcement has not been officially made, but the Venture Beat site has sold the fuse. The decision was made: no physical lounge at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The last time the event was held normally was in 2019. It was simply canceled in 2020 and went all-digital in 2021.

A fully online E3 2022

This approach had not really convinced fans and actors in the industry and ESA had promised a return to normal for 2022. However, the health context is such that there really is no other choice. ESA may have seen the current CES disaster. The new technology fair currently being held in Las Vegas has been maintained at all costs despite the Omicron wave. As a result, most of the exhibitors canceled their attendance at the last minute and the show was emptied of its substance. The aisles are empty and important announcements are made online.

This will be the second time that E3 will be held in this format. Let’s bet that the organization learned from the 2021 edition to offer us a more thrilling iteration. However, we now have to rely on competition. Geoff Keighley took advantage of this news to announce its Summer Game Fest, series of online events attracting more and more publishers. In 2021, it was for example during the first conference that the Elden Ring trailer was unveiled.

If E3 is still likely to lose feathers this year, players do not have to worry about being left behind. We can bet that important announcements will be made during the two events, in particular for the next gen consoles.
