Global PC monitor sales will collapse in 2022 and that’s normal

The IDC research institute says that global sales of PC screens will fall by 4% in 2022. A fall which follows two years of sharp increases during which households have equipped themselves with a monitor for remote work. . In 2021, screen sales were the strongest in nine years. From 2023, the market should return to normal volumes.

The year 2020 was marked, as you know, by the global coronavirus epidemic. A major event that had many consequences for everyone, both personally and professionally. For several months, we were forced to stay at home in order to limit the spread of the virus. Everything was then done remotely (apart from food shopping perhaps): communicating, having fun and working.

Remote work then became a reality for many French employees. The latter then equipped their homes to do so in good conditions. This of course includes all office equipment, including computers and monitors. PC monitors had two extremely successful years in 2020 and 2021, a trend confirmed by figures from research firm IDC. The latter estimates that the growth of the PC monitor market has increased by 8% and 6%respectively.

In 2020 it sold out 136.7 million screens worldwide, while in 2021 nearly 143.6 million. The Global Top 5 is made up of Dell, Lenovo, TPV, HP and Samsung. The order is different from one year to the next: if, in 2020 and in 2021, Dell is the leader and Samsung brings up the rear, Lenovo has made good progress in 2021, moving from fourth to second place and overtaking POS and HP.

PC sales grew in 2021 but will decline in 2022

2021 was therefore an exceptional year, the best of the previous nine years. Except in the fourth quarter, where sales fell by 5.2%. Why ? According to IDC, there are several phenomena. First, the employees who wanted to equip their homes did so. Then, telework will be less important, now that health restrictions are lifting around the world. Then, there are persistent transport problems. Finally, there is a shortage of components which always makes it difficult to manufacture new products.

And this will obviously continue in 2022: some problems of 2021 will continue in 2022. And new events have occurred in recent months: we are obviously talking about the war in Ukraine which is favoring a rise in the price of energy and transport. According to IDC, all of this is very naturally going to lead us to lower monitor sales in 2022. It will be “only” 3.6%. It could have been much worse, given the conditions. Then, the market should stabilize over the following years.
