Is the temperature of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor improvable?

A few weeks ago, AMD launched the Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors, which is characterized by having more cache. This processor improves slightly in performance, but it does not justify its price either and it has certain temperature problems. Now, an overclocker has removed the processor’s integrated heatsink (IHS) to see if it could improve the temperature.

the processor Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a total of 96MB of L3 cache, while the original model had 32 MB. At the same time, the frequencies are reduced a bit compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X, to control temperatures. This slows down performance a bit, despite the increased cache.

They remove the IHS from the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor to improve its temperature

remove the IHSinvolves removing the metal cover of the processor and protect silicon of the processor itself. Normally, this can be removed “easily”, although manufacturers sometimes weld them to avoid this process. It is not a simple process either, since it is very delicate and carelessness irremediably damages the processor.

Inside the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor some really interesting things appear. we see a DIE I/O which manages the RAM and PCIe and the DIE of cores covered with a heat-conducting paste. In addition, we see a space covered by something similar to silicone that covers an empty space. This space is intended for Ryzen 9 that have two core DIE.

What the user does is to replace the factory liquid metal used by AMD, with the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. Something interesting is that this simple change has allowed the processor temperature to be reduced by 10 degrees.

Madness, the user who has carried out this process, says that it has been very worthwhile. He assures that the Forza Horizon 5 reached 90 ° C before this process, but after the temperature has dropped quite a bit. It has also made the frequencies very stable, since before the processor was adjusted in frequency to reduce the temperature.

We reiterate that doing this process is not easy and an error will irreparably damage the processor. Removing the IHS requires a blade and quite a bit of pulsing. Note that if we damage the processor, the manufacturer will void the warranty and we will be left without a processor. So we recommend not doing it.

There is a lot of data missing

Although the fact of lowering the temperature by 10 °C is very interesting, there are aspects that are missing. No specific data is given on the software used to stress the processor. As we can see, the CPU and GPU load is 100%, something that is not achieved with games, but with syntactic benchmarks.

It should be noted that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor does not have overclocking support. AMD by design has limited this feature, due to the temperature problems that this processor has. Some manufacturers seem to be able to offer overclocking support for this Ryzen, although it is not very clear.

We suppose, that after this, we will see some overclocking like der8auer that could replicate this experiment. It is possible that if it is replicated, we will get more data and do a little deeper testing.
