MacBook sales skyrocket, Apple ahead of major PC makers

While Apple is celebrating MacBook sales during Q1 2021 and the same period in 2022, other major computer makers can’t say the same. Lenovo and HP, for example – the two largest in the industry – recorded a significant drop of 10% and 16% in sales, according to a survey carried out by Counterpoint Research.

In contrast, MacBooks recorded 8% growth in units sold during the first quarter of this year. In addition, the Cupertino giant recorded a 15% increase in sales year-on-year.

Dell was also another major manufacturer hit by the crisis, but managed to manage its orders so that there was a small growth of 1% in units sold – a milestone compared to competitors.

Overall PC sales were down 4.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022, largely driven by inflation and a chip shortage.

Factors that contributed to Apple’s good quarterly result

In addition to the aforementioned chip shortages, which have hit computer manufacturers globally, and inflation, there are a few other factors that may have contributed to the turn in Apple’s favour, according to Counterpoint Research.

This includes the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the ongoing lockdowns that China has suffered because of Covid-19.

“Our analysis suggests that the PC supply chain has become relatively conservative in terms of sales prospects in the mid-2000s. [primeiro trimestre de] 2022, largely dragged down by global inflation and regional conflict, which has brought uncertainty to PC demand,” said William Li of Counterpoint Research.

Apple, however, entered as an exception: 8% growth is considerable for the period.

The surge in demand came largely from the launch of the M1 chip line, as well as the successful MacBook Pro announced last year. Not to mention other products such as Mac Studio that also contributed to the company’s results gaining traction in the period.

Apple has also done well in the face of competition in other sectors such as smartphones which, despite the market not being so hot, the company handily surpassed its main rival Samsung during the fourth quarter of 2021 in units sold.
