MEGA celebrates its tenth anniversary and advances plans for the future

MEGA is celebrating, and the thing is that time flies by and a decade has already passed since the company was made known by the hand of Kim Dotcom himself, who shortly after would leave the ship in his own style, wrapped in controversy. However, the service continued to operate… and until today.

Today, as they remember in a press release published a couple of days ago coinciding with the tenth anniversary of its launch, MEGA has laid the foundations for encrypted cloud storage services and a zero-knowledge policy accessible from a browser, getting knead more than 270 million users throughout more than 250 countries around the world.

A number of users that, however, says little about the true state of MEGA, given that at the end of 2020 they celebrated 200 million users and that it is not specified how many are paid; but that together they accumulate more than one exabyte of data on the company’s servers. Servers that are no longer limited to being in New Zealand, but are spread across data centers in eight more countries.

These data and other similar ones are what you will find in the linked note, but this reminder marked MEGA is not only to congratulate themselves on what has been achieved: it has also served them to announce their plans for the future and there are really interesting ones for different user niches. . For example:

  • MEGA Desktop Appwhat until now we knew as MEGAsync, the desktop client for storing and synchronizing files, has a new version in development in which a “new and sophisticated synchronization engine” will be released that is now being tested.
  • On the other hand, MEGA will implement FUSE supporta well-known technology among Linux users, but compatible with other systems, thanks to which it is possible to mount external storage units (in the cloud, that is) as if they were disk drives.
  • MEGA will also implement the file sync on android, thus allowing to synchronize mobile files as if it were a PC. A most interesting function that will arrive this 2023, only for Android, yes (iOS limitations prevent the implementation of this functionality).
  • Another MEGA novelty for this year is the development of a new application, a password manager integrated using MEGA’s end-to-end encryption.

Other future plans point to the expansion of its data centers by Asis, the improvement of tools such as MEGA Chat or the launch of MEGA S4a professional-grade storage modality compatible with the Amazon S3 protocol.
