The new AWS region in Spain It has been in operation for just over a month. Located in Aragon, is the first infrastructure region of the company in the national territory, and the eighth in Europe. With it, people, companies and organizations that need to store data and run applications in centers that are in Spain have one more option to do so. It is an important advantage for Spanish organizations. But not the only one. Especially, for Aragon, an area that will benefit on many levels from the attraction of opening a cloud region like AWS’s.

The benefits for the area already started before the area was even officially opened. All thanks to the labor necessary for its construction and commissioning. Just to have it ready and running at full capacity, as pointed out by Amazon, 1,300 jobs will be created over the next decade full time in the three locations set for the development of the region.

The activity generated in the area since the start of operations has also benefited the area’s business ecosystem. The workers who have started the region, and those in charge of its maintenance, have revitalized with their presence the commerce and other companies in the area, which also results in an increase in indirect jobs.

Not only that, but having an infrastructure region in Aragon works as a focus and point of attraction of companies, related to a greater or lesser extent with technology. The technology-based companies in the area will also have the opening of this area with more business opportunities. It is very likely that this will make them need more qualified employees, which will bring more talent to Aragon. It will also contribute to the retention of the specialist in the area.

One of the aspects that attracted Amazon to the area to open its region to the community was precisely the technological level of the professionals in the area, and their training. The company was very pleased with the talent in the area. A talent that from now on will have more options to develop professionally without having to leave their place of origin.

Amazon is also going to do its bit to boost the local community, since it has confirmed that it has opened a AWS InCommunities fund, of 150,000 eurosto help local organizations and groups, as well as schools in the area, start various projects that benefit the community.

The company plans to invest 2,500 million euros in the development of the AWS region in Aragon over 10 years. This is the largest investment that has been made in the autonomous community by a company in recent years. This, together with the jobs that it will generate, both direct and indirect, will have an estimated impact on Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of more than 1,800 million euros.

The AWS region will improve the GDP of Aragon

A good part of this increase in GDP will correspond to Aragon, for the reasons mentioned. Specifically, according to various estimates, the arrival of the AWS infrastructure region in the region will increase the Gross Domestic Product of Aragon to reach 500 million euros.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, already referred to all this data during the launch of this AWS infrastructure region, at an event held to coincide with its launch in Madrid. During it, both he and the President of Aragon, Javier Lambánhighlighted the weight it will have in the economic and technological development of Spain and Aragon.

For Sánchez, the cloud is crucial to improve productivity and efficiency. But also the economy of the country. So much so that, according to him, he stated in the presentation, data management will represent 4% of Spain’s Gross Domestic Product in the near future. The President has confirmed that they expect that only in 2023, the employment cloud will reach 725,000 people.

A very important part of this, as we have seen, will be thanks to the new AWS region in Aragon, which will undoubtedly be one of the assets that will make Spain, as the Government has as its objective, become a hub for connectivity between the United States and Europe, with 70% of the data that travels between the two areas passing through the national territory.
