Securitas and Veesion implement an AI solution for the detection of shoplifting

Securitas and Veesion have signed an agreement to implement in Spain the first artificial intelligence (AI) system that allows detecting shoplifting in real time, from the recognition of certain gestures.

According to the data presented at the 2021 AECOC Congress on Unknown Loss, thefts cost Spanish businesses around 1,800 million euros. Although theft represents 63% of all crimes committed in the retail sector in Spain, only 5% are detected.

In response to this problem, Veesion, the world leader in anti-theft systems based on artificial intelligence by detection of suspicious gestures, has landed in Spain with Securitas to implement an AI system based on gestural analysis and active learning. Thanks to the advanced technology that integrates this security solution, suspicious behavior can be automatically detected by applying artificial intelligence models to the security cameras installed in establishments.

“We know very well the problem of theft through our vertical specialized in retail. Thanks to our agreement with Veesion, this specialization and our continuous commitment to technology, we will be able to offer our clients in this sector a solution to respond to this challenge in a profitable, effective and operational way, thus contributing to the continuity of your business”, Explain Paul PaciosCommercial Director of Electronic Security at Securitas Seguridad España.

For his part, Pablo Blanco, director of Veesion in Spain, affirms: «Thanks to our system, we are currently helping to more than 2,000 stores and supermarkets around the world to reduce their unknown loss by an average of 60%”.

How does it work

The system identifies the potential actors in a theft and analyzes them individually using the ‘deep learning’ with a exhaustive monitoring method which focuses both on the general movements of the suspected person and on their gestures. In this way, a warning is activated when an action suspected of theft is identified, which allows security personnel or the person in charge to act in time. The solution adapts to any type of business, whether they are small businesses with a limited number of cameras, or large stores with complex video surveillance systems.

This technology ensures the protection of people’s identity, nalizing only gestures and not physical or physiological characteristics of individuals.

To ensure compliance with the GDPR, Veesion and Securitas have established a video-surveillance area signaling and an image retention and deletion policy with a maximum period of 30 days. In addition, all the employees of each business will be informed of the presence of these video surveillance devices. Finally, the international transfer of the data used and stored does not take place.

Veesion operates under a SaaS (Software as a Service) model through a service that is hosted on an external secure cloud server where Veesion performs a retraining of the artificial intelligence algorithm for the continuous improvement of the detection of suspicious gestures.
