Suzume no Tojimari is Makoto Shinkai’s new anime film

Makoto Shinkai, the acclaimed director of Your Name, officially announces that Suzume no Tojimari will be the title of his new anime feature film he is working on.

The Nagano master, considered by many to be the “new Hayao Miyazaki”, has also published the first promotional image of the film, a poster that confirms what was revealed earlier this year when Shinkai himself had talked about an inspired post apocalyptic story from the emergency situation linked to the pandemic.

What is Suzume no Tojimari talking about?

Literally the title could translate as “The closing of Suzume’s door” and in the tweet the director talks about a modern adventure story, a road movie that he hopes will be enjoyable and entertaining.

The story stars Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet Kyushu town. One day Suzume meets a young traveler looking for a mysterious “door” and decides to follow him.

The girl discovers the existence of an ancient portal among the ruins located in the mountains, one of many gates connected to each other and scattered throughout Japan.

Legend has it that the opening of each of them is the cause of terrible disasters, so Suzume must be able to find all the doors before the whole country falls into a catastrophe.

Directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films in collaboration with STORY inc., Suzume no Tojimari will debut in Japanese cinemas in the fall of 2022 distributed by Toho.
