The GeForce RTX 3060 Super existed, but it never hit the market

NVIDIA was working on a GeForce RTX 3060 Super, a graphics card that would arrive as an intergenerational update, and that it was going to position between the GeForce RTX 3060 and the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. This model was so advanced that there was even an official BIOS necessary for its operation, although today we have been able to confirm that it is dated the December 16, 2020.

This means two things, the first is that NVIDIA was considering the launch of the GeForce RTX 3060 Super from the beginning, that is, since Ampere’s debut, and the second is that it could have hit the market at the same time as the GeForce RTX 3060. We all know what happened in the end, the green giant decided to release the standard 12 GB version and the Ti model, and later also put it on the market. market a version with 8 GB of graphics memory, but canceled the GeForce RTX 3060 Super.

At the specification level, the GeForce RTX 3060 Super is a graphics card that, deep down, leaves us no surprise, because it is a carbon copy of the GeForce RTX 3060 Mobileand its only differences are the graphic memory configuration, which is 12 GB (the Mobile version has 6 GB) and the working frequencies, which are obviously higher in the Super version as it is a desktop graphics card.

GeForce RTX 3060 Super Specifications

  • GA106 graphics core in 8nm.
  • 3,840 shaders.
  • GPU at 1,627 MHz-1,852 MHz, normal and turbo mode.
  • 120 texturing units.
  • 48 raster units.
  • 120 tensor cores.
  • 30 RT cores.
  • 192-bit bus.
  • 12GB of 15GHz GDDR6 memory.

Compared to the standard GeForce RTX 3060, the super model has two extra SM units, which means it has 256 more shader cores, and it also has two more RT cores, eight more texturing units, and eight more tensor cores than that. This, together with their higher work frequencies, should have resulted in an approximate performance improvement of between 5% and 10%, depending on each specific game, and would have turned it into direct rival of the Radeon RX 6600 XT.

We don’t know why NVIDIA decided not to release that GeForce RTX 3060 Super, but it’s clear that in the end it had an “alternative life”, since it ended up reaching the market converted into a GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile. This graphics card was one of the best in its range, and today it is still capable of offering excellent performance in games, especially in 1080p resolutions, which is where it is most comfortable due to its 6 GB of graphics memory configuration.
