Canon has renewed its catalog of lenses and has presented a monster for mirrorless cameras (RF mount) that will delight professional photographers. And we are talking about a gigantic model with a 100-300 focal length that will allow you to capture fantastic images of sporting events, nature and, basically, scenes at a great distance.
The all-seeing goal
with a weight of 2.59 kilos You might think that we are facing a real burden, but the truth is that given its varifocal versatility, this lens weighs little more than the 300mm model that was already present in the brand’s range of SLR cameras. The interesting thing is that we are dealing with a lens with a fixed f2.8 aperture, which makes it a very high-end model that arrives, as always, with a sealed body to avoid inclement weather and dust.
This translates into a prohibitive price aimed exclusively at large companies and professionals in the sector, since, with a price of 12,000 euros, it is not an objective that an amateur is going to take on vacation.
Thanks to its integrated stabilization system, the lens is able of rectify between 5 and 6 steps depending on whether the camera body also has a stabilized sensor, a more than necessary feature if we take into account the large focal lengths we are using. Also, a multifunction ring -it is the first RF objective to include it- it allows to modify preconfigured parameters in the camera, and a new customizable button (functions to choose from in the camera software) will allow you to activate the function you want in a comfortable and simple way while holding the lens.
At the focus level, a new Dual Nano USM motor is responsible for focusing at high speeds, ensuring maximum image quality throughout the entire zoom range.
Multiply your chances
As expected, the lens is perfectly compatible with Canon’s range of extenders, so using the 1.4x we will be able to achieve focal lengths of 140 to 420mm with an aperture of f/4, while the 2x extender will take us the focal length to an astonishing 200 to 600 millimeters with f/5.6.
Price and availability
The new RF 100-300 f/2.8 IS USM lens will hit stores in May with an approximate price of €12,000.
