Children watch more Youtube and Netflix than traditional TV

A study by Mediametrie affirms that children watch streaming or VOD programs more than so-called traditional television. They are less and less long in front of the television. And there are fewer and fewer of them. On the other hand, the time spent in front of a screen continues to increase.

The consumption of audiovisual content has changed a lot in 10 years. Thanks to the improvement in fixed and mobile Internet connection speeds, watching non-live programs has become much easier. It started with the programs in replay (or catch-up TV). And it continues with the platforms of streaming such as YouTube, Netflix, Disney+ or Prime Video. Television is consumed in a way delinearized », that is to say independently of the program schedule of the channels.

In addition, television is no longer the only screen for watching a film, series or documentary. The Tablet replaced the secondary television in the bedroom. L’laptop installs where a TV cannot fit. And the smartphones, where all services (Replay, VOD, streaming, SVOD) are available, support new viewers. Rarer are therefore the times when the television is on.

Children spend half as much time watching TV in 2021 as in 2011

This trend is even more marked among young people. According to a Mediametrie barometer, children aged 6 to 14 hours spent on average 1 hour and 10 minutes in front of the television every day in 2021. That’s 18 minutes less compared to 2020. This is half as much as 2011, when children watched television on average 2 hours and 18 minutes per day. According to Publicis Media, 74% of children were in front of television every day in 2012, compared to 56% only in 2021. A year ago, we reported that the average age of viewers was increasing. This is confirmed again here.

So less live television. And no more television at all. But always glued to audiovisual programs. And more and more. According to a study by M6 carried out in 2021, children spent on average 4 hours and 30 minutes in front of a screen watching videos. That is a quarter of an hour more than in 2020. The live programs represent 1 hour and 55 minutes of this time. The rest (2 hours and 35 minutes) is streaming, like YouTube, and SVOD or Replay. The delinearized has therefore largely taken precedence over the live.

They are also more and more numerous on these services: 76% in 2021, compared to 41% in 2019. We suspect that changes in parental consumption patterns during lockdowns since March 2020 also precipitated this surge.
