Upon receiving the copies of his students, an American university professor had the good idea to pass them through the ChatGPT grinder, in order to find out if they had been written by artificial intelligence. Problem: ChatGPT is absolutely unable to determine the origin of an essay.
A professor at Texa A&M University in the United States has blocked the graduation of 15 of his students. In question: the supposed use of ChatGPT to carry out the editorial work requested by the professor. For now, he gave them a rating of “X” accusing them of using the services of ChatGPT. Obviously wrong, since some of them had never even heard of AI.
But the main problem is that the professor in question asked ChatGPT if he had written the essays in question, to which the AI replied in the affirmative. However, ChatGPT is not designed for this purpose and returns too many false positives.

He threatens his students to give them a zero because of ChatGPT
Upon receiving the papers from his students, the teacher submitted them all to ChatGPT. “By grading your last three assignments, I opened my own Chat GTP account,” he wrote to his students. . “I’ll copy-paste your responses into this Chat GT GTP account, and the program will tell me if it generated the content. I will submit your last three jobs twice and if they are all from Chat GTP, you will receive a zero.”
If the attempt to discover a possible deception is commendable on the part of the teacher, the method employed is much less so. ChatGPT is hardly able to detect the origin of a text. For this, there are anti-cheat tools like GPTZero or Turn It.
For example, our colleagues from PCMag submitted to ChatGPT an article on Microsoft’s Zune, written at the time by one of the site’s editors. For the record, the device was released in 2006, while its marketing stopped in 2011. At that time, the famous AI did not exist. And yet, ChatGPT took credit for the writing.
By blocking their grades, the professor in question therefore suspended the graduation of his students. Unlike their classmates, 15 students did not receive their diploma at the same time as the others and revealed the case on Reddit. However, the university explains that the situation is finally back to normal for some of them. They did get their end-of-year diploma. Finally, one student admitted to having used “Chat GTP” in class, while a handful of them chose to complete a new assignment, made available by the teacher.
