Mortal Kombat 1 looks as absurdly violent as one could hope, as evidenced by the new gameplay video that was unveiled during Summer Game Fest.
NetherRealm Studios has given Mortal Kombat fans their first look at the gameplay of its upcoming fighting game, Mortal Kombat 1, by showing off the new roster and revealing what “Kameo Fighters” are. Ed Boon took the stage with Geoff Keighley to talk in depth about how Kameo Fighter’s systems will work during gameplay, showing off some classic looks for characters in the game.
However, these mostly teased a huge roster of them as well as playable characters for when the game finally launches on September 19, 2023 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. Some of the fighters we got to see include Kenshi, Mileena, Kitana, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub Zero and, of course, Johnny Cage, played by action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Mortal Kombat 1 looks as gory as expected
Kameo fighters add an extra twist to the series canon, with classic versions of characters like Kano, Sonia, and Jax coming to fight alongside you. This new mechanic is an additional way to customize your characters, with a second roster available as a Kameo after selecting your main fighter. While some fighters will likely be exclusive to the Kameo selection, Ed Boon clarified that there will be overlaps. Sub-Zero, for example, can serve as both a Kameo and a normal fighter.
As seen in a match set in Johnny Cage’s Hollywood home, Mortal Kombat 1 takes the franchise back in time, seemingly to the late 80s/early 90slong before the story and characters became too many.
From the revealed gameplay footage, fights seem much faster than in Mortal Kombat 11. The game now features air combos, with dedicated launchers and jugglers, combined with assists to keep enemies in the air, as well as than dedicated special jumps, like Scorpion’s hook. From the HUD we were shown, it looks like the game abandons the double bar system of Mortal Kombat 11in favor of a single gauge, but it brings back the famous “X-Ray” attacks that players love so much.
