Someone made the first NES Zelda playable in virtual reality, have you seen it?

If there is a classic title that has marked the evolution of video games throughout history in many aspects, that is it. The Legend of Zelda, that since his first cartridge for the NES, in 1986, he made it clear what his intentions were and it contained practically all the elements that we have seen expanded and improved in each of its subsequent installments throughout its 37 years and history.

Virtual reality for a 2D game

But of course, if Nintendo has been characterized by something, it is by never having fallen under the spell of virtual reality, so it was difficult to experience any of its franchises in that format (except for the episode of the LABO cardboard accessory with The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild). Until now, that a user has wrapped the blanket around his head and has developed an alternative version that we could enjoy with VR glasses.

The result is a replica of part of the original cartridge that has been completely revamped to be seen in 3D. That is to say, that each two-dimensional block that we see on the screen has been transformed into a three-dimensional element with four faces that the player can surround and look in any direction, respecting both the colors and the shapes of the block. Sprite original. Hence everything is full of those bushes and rocks so characteristic from the first title for the NES from the mid-80s.

To carry out this enormous work of adaptation of some 2D screens to other 3D ones, the modder (kite_VR) used a tool as classic on PC as the old Doomthat thanks to its customization capacity, got the job done with a mode who uses the engine questzdoomwhich is compatible with Quest VR.

We can only watch…for now

This work, at the moment, is not available for download and even if you have the Quest VR you will not be able to enter the old dungeons of Legend of Zelda from NES, since We only have the video that we leave just above as proof of this feat. It is logical that this is the case because everyone knows how Nintendo spends it and how little friend it is of the community messing with its old glories, especially when it still has some for sale through virtual consoles or compilations that it uses as a claim. for its online services on Switch.

Is demo we must take it as a first shot of something that could grow even more until it became a complete adaptation of the Legend of Zelda original, since at the moment kite_VR has only carried a part of the original cartridge, something that we can understand given the complexity of translating an old and established 2D concept into a radically different experience.

Would you like the work to be finished and in the future this VR version of the first Zelda Will it reach our computers to test it as it deserves? For now we will continue dreaming although you never know. The same until Nintendo is encouraged… (just kidding).
