Steam Deck durability tests show good laptop resistance

For those who recently pre-ordered the Steam Deck, waiting until Q4 2022 to get the product in hand can seem like an eternity. The good news for the most anxious is that a youtuber has just published a test of the laptop’s durability to anticipate what consumers can expect.

In this experiment, JerryRigEverything channel performed several resistance tests of the console: from scratches to fire on the laptop screen. The video might be too strong for some, but it did show some interesting details when the Steam Deck is externally stressed.

Tests with Steam Deck

The first of the tests involved screen scratches. The version used was the 512 GB version, which comes with a high-quality anti-reflective glass. Interestingly, this beefier version showed more abrasive damage than the cheaper models.

Afterwards, it was time for tests with a stylus. Zack Nelson used the blade to to destroy make several bruises on the surface of the device. Due to its plastic structure, the cuts and scratches were quite visible — especially the back of the Steam Deck — but nothing out of the ordinary.

Finally, it was the turn of the channel’s favorite experiments. The first one, which placed a lighter flame directly on the laptop’s screen, did not cause permanent damage. A black spot on the screen appears after a while, but disappears after a few seconds.

The second (and last) involved pressing the edges of the console to the maximum. And whoever expected a great tragedy was wrong: the Steam Deck barely got to bend and no noise or damage was observed, which proves the reinforced structure developed by Valve.

Verdict

The video shows that the notebook has interesting durability and a reinforced structure — despite the plastic composition. Those who opt for the more robust model should consider a protective film for the screen, as the version seems more vulnerable to scratches.

Overall, the Steam Deck has what it takes to be a long-lasting portable console, both against everyday incidents and in terms of game support. But at the end of the day, durability issues will always depend on consumer care — and not replicating tests from the JerryRigEverything channel.
