Xiaomi clarifies: it will integrate synchronization with Google Photos in the gallery app

A few days ago, those responsible for Xiaomi Cloud missed a publication that gave a lot to talk about, but without specifying. In short, the end of Xiaomi Cloud was anticipated, as the cloud data storage service is now known and the basis of several of the applications that pre-install the brand’s devices, but also of subsidiaries such as POCO or Redmi.

Thus, the Chinese company announced the gradual dismantling of Xiaomi Cloud with a first effect: the end of the synchronization of photos through the gallery application. However, everything was left in suspense, since what was seen as a hasty press release in which exact dates did not even appear, was deleted a few hours after its publication.

Total, it was not clear when exactly everything was closed, but a decision of this type is not improvised. And although the company has not said anything about it, nor to deny what was published, we take it for granted. He pointed there to abandonment of both the synchronization function of the Xiaomi gallery with Xiaomi Cloud, and that of Xiaomi Cloud Membership… What can we expect, then?

Xiaomi Cloud

In other words, if Xiaomi Cloud membership does not survive, how will Xiaomi Cloud survive? After all, cloud storage is used to save and sync data from other Xiaomi apps like Notes. The mystery will probably be solved in the near future. Meanwhile, something else is confirmed that was also noted in the aforementioned statement.

In addition, another change is confirmed that was clearer because it was fully described: “a migration window to Google Photos” that closed at the end of 2023 and that has already been opened, according to Xiaomi in a note that, this time , remains as is. And yes, there is migration to Google Photos and in a much more determined and prompt way than expected.

Basically, Xiaomi’s gallery app will implement synchronization function with Google Photos…. and will remove its own, still present and that synchronizes the images with Xiaomi Cloud. The deployment of this change will begin next week in some Asian regions such as Singapore and will be extended later to the rest of the market in which the brand operates, without a specific deadline.

It remains to be seen if, as indicated in the first note, the definitive closure of Xiaomi Cloud is maintained, at least of the storage and synchronization service linked to the photo gallery, by the end of next year. But as for now, everything that has been advanced is being fulfilled… the question now is whether to use the gallery or use Google Photos directly. Or another application or service, of course.
