Apple introduces new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M2 chip

Apple today unveiled its new MacBook Air. The device’s main highlight is the presence of the M2 chip, the latest – and most powerful – version of its proprietary processor.

According to the company, the device arrives with 11.3 millimeters when closed and weighing just over 1 kg. The product, which will be marketed in four colors, marks the return of MagSafe as a charger. This makes the device’s two Thunderbolt ports available.

In the settings part, the new MacBook has a 13.6-inch screen with thinner edges and 500 nits, which guarantees 25% brighter colors. The device’s camera comes with 1080p resolution, which, combined with the M2 chip, offers up to 2X more resolution than previous models.

Internally, Apple will sell versions with SSD up to 2TB and RAM memory up to 24GB. In addition, the device’s keyboard features an intelligent configuration, with TouchID, support for different pressures for different functions, the presence of three microphones and speakers with spatial audio.

All of this is powered by a battery that promises up to 18 hours of video. To achieve this, the new MacBook supports 67W fast charging that guarantees a 50% charge in 30 minutes.

The company took the opportunity to also present the new version of the MacBook Pro. The novelty that differentiates it from the versions released in October last year is that the device also has an M2 processor.

Therefore, it is possible to find the same 13-inch screen with 500 nit, Thunderbolt ports and Wi-Fi 6 support. In addition, with the new chip, the device can be found with up to 2 TB and 24 GB of RAM.

Here, Apple promises up to 20 hours of battery life on the device, thanks to the improvements brought by the M2. On the cooling side, there is an active cooling system, which promises to make users able to enjoy everything that the device can offer without loss of energy.

The highlight of the two devices is the presence of the M2 chip, the company’s next generation of processors – which arrives as an evolution of the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra, and which promises significant performance improvements.

The chip was built using a 5nm process that features 20 billion transistors – 25% more than the previous-generation release. With this difference, performance should also increase – up to 18% in the case of the CPU and 35% in the case of the GPU.

To ensure this increase, Apple used 100Gbps of bandwidth and 24GB unified memory along with four high-performance and four high-efficiency cores – with a shared cache of 16MB on the former and 4MB on the latter.

Finally, there is support for videos in up to 8K H.264 and HEVC – which, in theory, means that devices with an M2 chip arrive with the possibility of playing videos in 4K and 8K simultaneously.

price and availability

The MacBook Air with M2 chip arrives in Brazil starting at R$ 13,299. The 13-inch MacBook Pro has versions starting at R$14,499.
