MSI: 1000W power supply for your RTX 3090 Ti, how is it possible?

It’s been some time now that NVIDIA’s next top-of-the-line graphics cards, the RTX 3090Ti, are on the lips of all hardware enthusiasts. The technical specifications of the flagship model of M: YES, your model DELETE X, have now come to light surprising everyone by requiring a power supply of 1000 watts, and curiously they have done it just at the moment in which NVIDIA has asked the manufacturers to stop the production of these graphics due to problems in your bios… but also in your hardware. And, with how advanced the production of these GPUs by MSI seems, is this a manufacturer debacle?

It seems that the concept of “low consumption” that almost all manufacturers boasted in recent years is something that does not go with the new generation graphics cards, and in the case of MSI it is surprising that they have not cut a hair to the specify that your new RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X will require nothing more and nothing less than 1000 watts in the power supply to work properly, even though the TDP of the graphics card is 480 W. What is going on?

MSI’s RTX 3090 Ti, dead before it was born

RTX 3090 Ti Specs

The alleged leaked technical specifications of the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X confirm that the graphics card will have memory of 21Gbps, as was already assumed, and this means that this family of NVIDIA graphics will be the first to have such memory speed. In this model, MSI incorporates its highest-end custom cooling system, allowing the GPU to reach 1,900 MHz in Extreme mode.

But is this reason enough for the graphics card to require a 1000 watt power supply? An interesting fact is that this model requires three 8-pin PCIe connectors from the power supply to work (instead of a single 16-pin connector), although it is not yet clear if MSI will go with the traditional connectors or the new one, capable of supplying up to 600 W by itself. In any case, we are dealing with a graphics card with a 480 watt TDP and we can’t figure out why MSI says you need a 1000W power supply to run it.

But this is not a chart that was born dead for this reason alone; If its technical specifications have already been leaked, it is that MSI already has very advanced production. In principle, these graphics cards were going to be launched on January 27, but now NVIDIA has stopped the manufacturers because, it seems, there are problems in both the BIOS and the hardware itself.

What does this mean? That MSI could have manufactured hundreds of these graphics cards that are defective. If NVIDIA has really stopped the production of these GA102-350 GPUs due to problems, it is quite likely that the launch will end up being delayed, but the fact that MSI has its production so advanced can be a serious setback for the manufacturer, specifically because if it were a Only a BIOS problem is something that is easy to fix, but since hardware problems are also cited, it is possible that MSI has manufactured hundreds or even thousands of very expensive paperweights.

And the “expensive” thing is the third nail in MSI’s coffin regarding this graph, since the price they will have has also been leaked, and as you can see below, it is 30% more expensive than the RTX 3090 at the time of its release:

  • MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X: from $3,654 to $4,497.
  • MSI RTX 3090 Ti GAMING X TRIO: $3,571.

Of course, if you’re willing to pay this crazy amount of money for a graphics card, you probably won’t have any problem buying a 1,000-watt or higher power supply as well, right?
