So far, the company has stayed away from live broadcasts, but a report from the Deadline site indicates that Netflix is currently considering the idea of rolling out this feature for a “ series of unscripted shows and stand-up specials “.

Netflix confirmed to Deadline that the project is overseen by a “ small group ” of people and that it is currently at the “ early stages of development “. Live meetings are another possibilityaccording to Deadline, and it is likely that live sports be included in the future. This is something other platforms are already doing. For example, we find Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV Plus.

Netflix wants to compete with TV with live shows

According to Deadline, the introduction of live shows would allow the streaming giant to hold live voting for competitive shows like the upcoming Dance 100 show and for stream its annual Netflix Is A Joke festival.

This participatory content could also encourage Netflix users to maintain their subscription rather than canceling and re-subscribing when an interesting program is launched. The giant had recently lost nearly 200,000 subscribers due to the war in Ukraine, but this new feature should allow it to reverse the trend.

Thanks to the arrival of these new live broadcasts, Netflix could therefore do a lot of damage to television, which is increasingly suffering from the arrival of all these video-on-demand platforms. We had also seen at the beginning of the year that a study by Mediametrie affirmed that children already watched more YouTube and Netflix than traditional television. To save the French channels, the National Assembly had proposed to remove the Netflix button from TV remote controls. The report gives no specific date as to when the first live content might appear on the platform.
