Netflix surpasses 230 million subscribers worldwide, but growth is slow

Netflix has just announced its results for the year 2022, and in particular its number of subscribers. The giant would have ended the year with no less than 230 million customers, a record.

Two years after passing the 200 million subscriber mark, Netflix has just officially announced that its video on demand service now has more than 230 million subscribers. The streaming giant therefore only managed to gain 30 million subscribers in two years, but still exceeded analysts’ expectations.

2022 has been a rough year, with a bumpy start, but a brighter end the company said in a letter announcing results for the fourth quarter of last year. Indeed, it is often said that Netflix had lost more than a million subscribers at the start of 2022. However, the company was able to count on the arrival of flagship series and a new cheaper offer to attract new customers.

Netflix subscriber numbers are finally on the rise again

At the end of last year, we announced that Netflix had seen its subscriber numbers rise again thanks to the arrival of highly anticipated series as Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Purple Heartsthe documentary on Harry and Meghan but also more recently thanks to Wednesdayhis biggest hit of 2022.

Netflix has also had its fill of Korean dramas, which have been skyrocketing in popularity on the platform for a few years now. Many series have managed to seduce subscribers around the worldincluding Extraordinary Attorney Woowhich has exceeded 400 million hours of viewing, or even Alchemy of Soulspart 2 of which will be released tomorrow in France.

2022 also marked the launch of a new cheaper formula with advertisements, displayed at only 5.99 euros per month. The latter probably did not live up to Netflix’s expectations, but it was still chosen by 9% of new subscribers to the platform since its launch.

Finally, in addition to its annual results, Netflix announced last night that its founder, Reed Hastings, is stepping down as co-CEO of the company and becoming its executive chairman. Hastings will be replaced by Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, joint managing directors.
